Have you met any dogs?

Have you made friends with any dogs on Maui? We have a Labrador we see every trip on Napili beach named Sam. Regulars there will know who I am talking about.

Has anyone made friends with a dog on other beaches or is this just a Napili thing? Sam isn’t our only canine friend there but one is enough to mention for now.

Maui is well known for its dog-friendly beaches and laid-back vibe, so it’s definitely possible to make friends with local dogs or visiting pups while you’re there. Napili Beach, where you’ve met Sam, is famous for having regular canine visitors, but other beaches on the island also have their own dog regulars.

Here’s a summary of some experiences people often report on Maui:

  • Kaanapali Beach: Often has locals walking their dogs in the mornings and evenings. Friendly dogs may approach, especially in less crowded areas.
  • Wailea Beach: Known for resort dogs and guests bringing their pets. Can be a mix of calm and playful dogs.
  • Makena Beach (Big Beach): More remote, less crowded, so dogs here are often with families who hike or picnic. Great for interacting with friendly dogs in a wide open space.
  • Keawakapu Beach: Another spot with occasional resident or visiting dogs, often Labradors or Golden Retrievers. People often bring toys or treats, making it easier to engage.

Tips for meeting dogs on Maui:

  • Always ask the owner before petting or playing with a dog. Most Maui locals are friendly and will introduce their dogs.
  • Morning or late afternoon is usually the best time—less crowded and more locals walking their dogs.
  • Bring a small toy or ball if you’re comfortable—it can make introductions easier and more fun for both you and the dog.

So while Napili Beach may have its own famous dogs like Sam, making friends with dogs is definitely not limited to that area. Maui’s relaxed beach culture encourages dog interactions, and with a little care, you can have memorable moments with pups all over the island.
