October- one day from cruise ship- fall foliage

Would like to consider renting a car in hopes of seeing the leaf colors. Will arrive Oct 23- I know no guarantee On seeing the colors- is there a convenient car rental near where our ship will dock- if so where to drive for the day?

Visiting Portland, Maine in late October is a great time for fall foliage, although the peak colors can vary from year to year. Arriving on October 23, you should still see a mix of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, particularly in inland areas and along scenic drives.

Regarding car rental, most cruise ships dock near the Maine State Pier or Ocean Gateway Terminal in Portland. There are several convenient car rental locations nearby, either within a short taxi/ride-share from the pier or just a few blocks away. Major companies like Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz have offices within downtown Portland, making it easy to pick up a vehicle for the day.

For a one-day drive focused on fall colors and scenic views, here are some suggested routes and destinations:

  • Route 1: Portland to Freeport and Brunswick – Take US-1 North to Freeport, home to the L.L. Bean flagship store and charming downtown shops. Continue north to Brunswick for small-town New England charm. This route offers coastal views mixed with inland foliage.
  • Route 2: Portland to Bradbury Mountain State Park – About 30 minutes north of Portland, this park has easy hiking trails and a summit with panoramic views of the foliage, perfect for quick stops and photos.
  • Route 3: Portland to Sebago Lake / Lakes Region – Drive northwest to Sebago Lake and surrounding towns like Naples and Bridgton. This area has beautiful lake views framed by fall colors and is less crowded than coastal towns.
  • Route 4: Coastal Loop – Cape Elizabeth to Kennebunkport – Head south along the coast, stopping in Cape Elizabeth to see Portland Head Light. Continue to Kennebunkport for quaint streets, scenic harbor views, and some coastal foliage.

Tips for your day:

  • Start early to maximize daylight, especially in late October when sunset is around 5:30 PM.
  • Consider prioritizing inland routes for foliage, as coastal areas tend to be more green late in the season.
  • Pack a camera and snacks; small towns like Freeport and Kennebunkport have cafes and bakeries worth stopping for.
  • If you want to maximize flexibility, check rental car pickup times in advance and make a reservation for the day.

Overall, picking up a rental car near the pier gives you the freedom to explore both coastal and inland areas, ensuring a scenic day even if the foliage is just past its peak. Bradbury Mountain, the Lakes Region, and the coastal lighthouses are all convenient and picturesque options for a fall drive from Portland.
