Recreational shrimping

Hello I will be in PCB next week. Some other places I have stayed in Florida had good piers where locals advised using a throw net to catch shrimp. Wondered if anyone had a recommendation for this area?

Thank you

Panama City Beach (PCB) offers some good opportunities for recreational shrimping, especially for visitors interested in using throw nets from piers, docks, or shallow waters. Shrimping is seasonal, and local knowledge is key to finding productive spots.

Best Areas for Shrimping in PCB:

  • St. Andrews State Park: The piers and shallow waters around the park are popular among locals for recreational shrimping. Early mornings or evenings tend to be most productive.
  • Shoreline near Hathaway Bridge / Grand Lagoon: Many local anglers report success using throw nets in the calm waters near the bridge, especially around the mangroves and small channels.
  • Private docks and canals around PCB: Rental homes along canals often provide easy access to shrimping spots. Ask your rental host or neighbors for local tips on the best times.
  • Local piers: Some piers allow shrimping outside of paid fishing hours—check rules, as some piers only permit certain types of gear or have restrictions on harvesting shrimp.

Tips for Recreational Shrimping:

  • Use a light, sturdy throw net sized appropriately for shallow waters (typically 6–10 feet in diameter).
  • Check local regulations for size limits, bag limits, and seasonal restrictions. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regulates recreational shrimping, and licenses may be required.
  • Timing matters: dawn and dusk are often best for shrimping, as shrimp move closer to shallow waters to feed.
  • Be mindful of tides; outgoing tides often concentrate shrimp near the shore and in channels.

In summary, PCB has multiple productive spots for recreational shrimping, especially around St. Andrews State Park, Grand Lagoon, and canal areas. Bring a throw net, check regulations, and plan your trip around tides and low-light periods for the best results.
