Grocery pickup
Hello! My husband and I are longtime visitors of Kauai, but this year we are bringing our kids (4&7) for the first time! In the past, we usually stopped at Walmart for groceries on our way up to the north shore where we stay. This year, we are thinking to get our groceries via the pick up option at either Target or Walmart to make that more seamless with the kids! Does anyone have experience with either/both of those stores and maybe recommend which to pick for that purpose? Thanks!
Using grocery pickup can be a great way to streamline your arrival on Kauai, especially when traveling with young children. Both Walmart and Target offer online ordering with curbside pickup, and many families find it convenient to schedule ahead so you can head straight to your north shore accommodations without juggling kids in the store.
Here are some considerations and tips based on experience:
- Walmart Pickup: Walmart’s online platform is straightforward and allows you to select a pickup time that fits your travel schedule. You can find most basic grocery needs here, including snacks, drinks, and staple items. Many visitors report that the Kauai Walmart is efficient with curbside service, but note that some fresh items like produce may have limited availability or variety compared to larger stores on the mainland.
- Target Pickup: Target also offers same-day or scheduled pickup. Many visitors find that Target’s experience can feel slightly smoother, and the store often carries high-quality snack options, kid-friendly items, and toiletries in addition to groceries. Depending on location, the pick-up spots can be easier to access without navigating a large parking lot.
- Timing: Both stores recommend placing orders at least a day in advance, especially for popular time slots on weekends or mornings. If you are arriving on a Friday or Saturday, try to reserve your pickup slot early in the week.
- Ease with Kids: Many parents find Target easier with young children because the curbside process is quick, and there is sometimes a separate lane for pickup. Walmart can be efficient as well, but the pickup lanes can occasionally be busy.
Additional tips:
- Double-check the availability of your preferred items, especially fresh produce, meat, and dairy, since inventory can be limited on the island.
- Have your ID and order confirmation ready for smooth curbside pickup.
- Consider bringing your own cooler bags if you plan to store perishable items in your vehicle for the drive to the north shore.
Overall, both options work well, but for a first-time family visit with young children, Target may offer a slightly easier and more seamless experience. Either way, pre-ordering groceries will save time and reduce stress on arrival, letting you get settled quickly and enjoy your Kauai vacation.
