A friend and I will be on Maui in Feb and we are both avid snorkel snobs really. We have been very fortunate to have snorkelled many places where there is colourful coral as well as tropical fish. That seems to be harder and harder to find now
Coral gardens is described as colourful coral but when I see photos it just looks greenish.
Has anyone snorkelled recently and can say if there is in fact live colourful coral there. Otherwise I will save my money and just snorkel the various spots from shore
Thanks so much
Coral Gardens, located on the north shore of Maui near Honolua Bay, has long been known as a popular snorkel spot. In recent years, like many reef areas worldwide, it has experienced some bleaching and changes in coral health, which can affect the vibrancy you might see in photos.
Recent snorkelers have reported that while there is still live coral, the colors tend to be more muted – greens, browns, and some light purples rather than the bright reds and yellows you might see in tropical postcards. The area is still rich with fish, including parrotfish, butterflyfish, and humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa (reef triggerfish), so it can still be rewarding for snorkelers who appreciate marine life beyond just vibrant coral colors.
If your priority is seeing exceptionally colorful coral, you may want to consider alternative spots on Maui that are closer to shore and have been noted for more vibrant reefs:
If you are comfortable with a boat trip, Molokini offers some of the most vibrant coral in Maui, but if you prefer shore snorkeling, Ahihi-Kinau and parts of Honolua Bay provide good experiences with abundant fish, even if the coral isn’t as vividly colorful as in the past.
Overall, Coral Gardens is worth visiting for experienced snorkelers interested in marine life diversity, but if your main goal is highly colorful coral, you might allocate your budget and time to a different spot.
