Southern road to Pipiwai Trail

Is the road on the southern side of the island completely closed? I know rental cars say don’t take it but is there a way to check on that specific day to see if it’s open? We’ve done most of the Road To Hana on a previous trip but didn’t have time to hike the Pipiwai Trail. We’d like to check that off our bucket list so trying to figure out the best approach to do only that. Staying in Wailea and renting midsize SUV

It's great that you're planning to hike the Pipiwai Trail! This trail, located in the Kipahulu District of Haleakalā National Park, offers some of the most beautiful scenery in Maui, with lush rainforests, waterfalls, and incredible views of the coastline. However, accessing the trail can be tricky due to road conditions, especially when traveling along the southern route.

1. Road Conditions to Pipiwai Trail:

Regarding the road on the southern side of the island, you're likely referring to the Hana Highway beyond Hana, which leads to the Kipahulu area and the Pipiwai Trail. The road is technically open to the public, but there are certain challenges and considerations:

  • Rental Car Restrictions: Many rental car companies advise against taking this route due to the rough conditions, including narrow, winding roads and occasional washouts or roadblocks. Rental agreements often prohibit driving on unpaved or poorly maintained roads. Therefore, it’s essential to check with your rental car company before deciding to take this route.
  • Access to Pipiwai Trail: The road to the Kipahulu District (where the Pipiwai Trail begins) is paved for the most part, but there are areas where it can be narrow, winding, or affected by landslides, especially during the rainy season. However, this road is typically passable unless there’s been a recent storm or significant weather event that has caused damage to the road.

2. Checking Road Conditions Before You Go:

To check whether the road is open or if any closures might be in effect on the day you plan to visit, here are some options:

  • Maui County Website: The official Maui County website often posts updates on road conditions, closures, or maintenance schedules. It’s a good place to check the status of the southern roads.
  • Haleakalā National Park Website: The official site for Haleakalā National Park also provides updates on road conditions and access to the Kipahulu District. You can check for any closures or advisories related to the Pipiwai Trail.
  • Local News or Social Media: Checking local news websites or social media groups dedicated to Maui, such as local Facebook groups or the Maui subreddit, can give you real-time updates from other travelers who might have encountered road closures or delays.
  • Maui Road Conditions Hotline: The Hawaii State Department of Transportation often operates a road conditions hotline (808-587-2150) that you can call for real-time updates on road closures and road work on the island.

3. Alternate Access to Pipiwai Trail:

If you're concerned about driving the southern road or just want to be on the safe side, you can take the Road to Hana and then continue to Kipahulu (the southern route from Hana to the Pipiwai Trail). While this is still a winding and somewhat challenging drive, it tends to be less restricted compared to some of the more remote southern roads. You would access the Pipiwai Trail through the Kipahulu Visitor Center and trailhead, which is easily accessible from this route.

4. Things to Consider:

  • Since you're staying in Wailea, it's a long drive (about 2-2.5 hours each way) to get to the Pipiwai Trail, so be prepared for a full day of travel. Make sure to start early to allow time for the hike, which takes about 2-3 hours round trip.
  • Even if you don't drive the full southern route, you can still access the Pipiwai Trail from the Hana side. The hike itself is well worth it, with scenic views of bamboo forests, lush landscapes, and Waimoku Falls at the end.

In conclusion, while the road to Pipiwai Trail can be a bit challenging, it is typically open unless there has been significant weather damage. Just be sure to check for updates before you go and plan your route accordingly. If you prefer not to risk the road conditions, taking the Hana Highway and accessing the trail from the Kipahulu District is a reliable and scenic option. Either way, you’re in for a fantastic adventure!

Enjoy your trip to Maui and your anniversary celebrations!
