Florida to New Orleans with kids

Hello,

I am planning a 3 week road trip April-May with my partner, 2x 4 yr olds and a 1 yr old. It would start and end in Orlando.

Everglades and Key West essential. The first plan was to drive the coast road to New Orleans, but I’m finding so many beautiful places in Florida (like Springs) that I don’t want to miss anything!

I’d really appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks

Your road trip through Florida and to New Orleans sounds fantastic! With two young kids and a 1-year-old, it’s great to balance beautiful scenic drives with kid-friendly stops. Below are some recommendations to make the most out of your trip while ensuring it's both fun and manageable for everyone.

Since you're starting in Orlando, I'll suggest a route that includes a mix of natural attractions, beaches, and family-friendly activities, making it an unforgettable trip.

1. Everglades and Key West: These are must-sees, especially for the wildlife and natural beauty. Make sure to take an airboat tour in the Everglades to see alligators and other wildlife, which is sure to be a hit with the kids. In Key West, take a relaxing stroll around the island, visit the Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, or take a glass-bottom boat tour for some fun on the water.

2. Florida Springs: Florida has some amazing springs you shouldn't miss:

  • Wekiwa Springs State Park - Located near Orlando, this is a great place for a short stop. You can swim, kayak, or just relax by the springs.
  • Silver Springs State Park - Known for its glass-bottom boat tours, this spring is beautiful and very family-friendly.
  • Blue Springs State Park - If you visit in spring, you might even catch a glimpse of manatees. It’s a great spot for a swim or to hike along scenic trails.

3. St. Augustine: Head up the coast to St. Augustine, the oldest city in the U.S. There are many historical sites, but also lots of kid-friendly spots like the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and the Pirate and Treasure Museum. It’s a good halfway stop between Orlando and the more southern parts of Florida.

4. Southwest Florida: As you head down to the Everglades, consider stopping in places like Naples or Sanibel Island for beautiful beaches and relaxed family activities. Sanibel Island is known for its shelling beaches and wildlife refuges, perfect for little ones to explore.

5. Drive to New Orleans: When you start heading out of Florida toward New Orleans, there are some great stops:

  • Destin – If you're traveling along the coast, you could stop in Destin for beautiful white-sand beaches and family-friendly fun, like visiting the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park.
  • Gulf Shores, Alabama – Another great family stop with beaches and fun outdoor activities.

6. New Orleans: Once in New Orleans, there’s a ton for kids to enjoy:

  • The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas - Perfect for young kids who love sea creatures.
  • The City Park – Offers wide open spaces for kids to run around, and there’s also the New Orleans Museum of Art and a fun sculpture garden.
  • Children’s Museum – This interactive museum is always a hit with the little ones.

7. Other Florida Stops: If you have time, consider:

  • Gainesville’s Natural Springs - A nice detour if you’re heading north. Places like Devil’s Den or Blue Springs are great for a swim.
  • Cocoa Beach – If your kids enjoy the beach, Cocoa Beach is great for a family-friendly day with plenty of activities like surf lessons or just playing in the sand.

In summary, your Florida trip should mix scenic routes with time to explore parks, springs, and beaches. A good balance of outdoor activities will keep the kids entertained and give everyone a chance to unwind. The drive to New Orleans will offer a nice change of pace, with some lovely stops along the way!
