Tall Ships 2026

Just saw that New Orleans is going to be the first US stop next year for the sest...sequ...uh, the 250th anniversary!

May 28 to (I think) June 2. Moored all along the Mississippi.

My question is, that's later than we usually come - weather sticky hot already?

Late May in New Orleans is typically warm and can start to feel quite humid, as the city transitions from spring into early summer. Average high temperatures around late May to early June are usually in the mid-80s Fahrenheit (about 29–30°C), with nighttime lows in the mid-60s to low 70s Fahrenheit (18–22°C). Humidity can make it feel hotter than the actual temperature, so “sticky” conditions are definitely possible.

Weather Considerations:

  • Expect warm, humid conditions with occasional afternoon showers or thunderstorms. These are usually brief but can be heavy.
  • Morning and early evening are often the most comfortable times for outdoor events like walking along the riverfront to see the Tall Ships.
  • Dress in lightweight, breathable fabrics, and wear sunscreen and a hat. Carry water to stay hydrated while exploring the docks and riverfront.

Planning for the Tall Ships Visit:

  • Late May is a busy tourist period due to the 250th anniversary celebrations, so plan for crowds and possible ticketing for ship tours.
  • Arrive early in the day to avoid the peak heat and to secure better viewing or boarding times for the ships.
  • Consider staying in a hotel near the French Quarter or riverfront to minimize walking in the heat and have easy access to refreshments and rest breaks.

Overall, while the weather may be sticky, late May offers longer daylight hours and vibrant city energy, making it a lively time to experience the Tall Ships festival. Being prepared for warmth and humidity will make your visit more enjoyable.
