Hi locals and travelers, planning my first visit to Miami beach and got a couple of questions :) Traveling in mid Nov (female traveler)
1. Area, I'm gonna do a few nights at a hotel in South beach, but considering an airbnb in Mid or North beach the rest of the days. Which of these would be better? I prefer a non crowded beach for long walks, close to groceries, I don't drive, not a foodie and past party age. Basically going for the beach :).
2. How bad is immigration and lines at the airport? Coming on a Sunday, afternoon or Evening (undecided) What can I expect?
3. I read about an express bus from the airport, is this still working? Average cost of a taxi? Are there flatrates? I'd like to avoid Uber.
4. Wild life ;) Bugs, mozzies, roaches will I have to meet them all? I've been to Mexico so I'm guessing it might be the same type of creatures?
5. Is it safe to walk around in general? Areas to avoid? Can I walk the beach after dark? I love night walks on the beach.
6. Best elegant roof top bar? Or should I go to downtown Miami for this?
Thank you in advance :)
Welcome to Miami Beach! Here are some tips and answers to your questions:
1. Area: South Beach vs. Mid/North Beach
If you're looking for a less crowded beach and prefer long walks, then North Beach would be a better option compared to South Beach. South Beach can get very crowded, especially along Ocean Drive, and while it’s vibrant, it’s not as peaceful as other areas. Mid and North Beach have quieter stretches of sand, so you can enjoy the beach without the hustle and bustle. These areas also tend to be more residential, so you’ll find local grocery stores, cafes, and some great spots to unwind. Since you don’t drive and prefer proximity to groceries, North Beach might be your best bet. It's a quieter vibe with easier access to stores, and you can always take a short bus or taxi ride to South Beach if you want to explore the more lively areas for a night or two.
2. Immigration & Airport Lines
Immigration lines at Miami International Airport (MIA) can vary, but typically, the lines are longer in the afternoon and evening, especially if you're coming in on a Sunday. If you’re arriving from an international flight, you can expect a wait at immigration, but there are options like the Global Entry program, which can speed things up if you’re eligible. It’s always a good idea to allow yourself at least 1–1.5 hours after landing to go through customs, just in case. Miami's airport can be busy, but it usually moves fairly efficiently. If you’re flying domestically, lines should be shorter.
3. Transportation from the Airport
Yes, the express bus service from the airport to South Beach is still operating and is a great affordable option. The bus costs around $2.65 and takes you to South Beach in about 30 minutes. However, if you prefer a more direct route or don’t want to deal with public transport, taxis are available at the airport. The average taxi fare to South Beach from MIA is around $35–40, depending on traffic. There are no flat rates for taxis from the airport to other areas in Miami, but they generally follow the meter. If you want to avoid Uber, taxis or the express bus are your best bet.
4. Wildlife & Bugs
Miami, like most tropical destinations, does have some bugs. Mosquitoes are common, especially in the evenings, and while it's not as intense as in some tropical areas, it’s still a good idea to bring some insect repellent. As for roaches, they are not uncommon in warm climates, but they aren't a major issue unless you're staying in less-maintained places. Just be mindful of keeping food sealed and trash contained, especially in warmer months. Miami doesn't have a serious bug problem for tourists, but you might see some critters, especially near water or during humid weather. It’s not as bad as Mexico, but take precautions if you’re sensitive to bugs.
5. Safety and Walking Around
Miami Beach, including South Beach and North Beach, is generally very safe for tourists, especially during the day and early evening. However, like any large city, you should stay aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. Avoid walking in very isolated areas after dark, especially in the downtown or more residential parts of the city. Walking along the beach at night is typically safe, but it’s always best to stay in well-lit areas, and it’s a good idea to go with a friend if possible. If you’re alone, always be mindful of your personal safety, and stick to more populated areas.
6. Best Elegant Rooftop Bars
For an elegant rooftop bar, you don’t have to leave South Beach. There are a couple of standout spots:
If you want a different scene, Downtown Miami also has some great spots like Sugar at the EAST Miami Hotel, which offers stunning panoramic views of the skyline.
Hope this helps, and enjoy your first visit to Miami Beach! It's a beautiful place with a lot to offer, and you'll find plenty of relaxing and enjoyable activities outside of the typical party scene. Have a great trip!
