traffic from airport on a Saturday morning in October

Hi from the UK. We are flying in to Atlanta on 1 October and spending 3 nights in the city. We are then collecting a rental car on Saturday 4 October and heading towards Blue Ridge. I have booked the car to pick up from Atlanta airport as not keen on the idea of driving in the city. I have read that traffic around Atlanta can be pretty bad. Is this still likely to be the case on a Saturday morning? If we want to be in Blue Ridge by around 10.30am Google maps is suggesting a departure time from the airport car rental center of 8.20am for a 1 hour 50 minute drive (without any rest stops) does this sound accurate? Thanks for any tips or info.

It's great that you're planning a visit to Blue Ridge! As for your concerns about traffic in Atlanta on a Saturday morning, here are a few key points to help you plan your trip:

Traffic Around Atlanta on a Saturday Morning: Atlanta does have a reputation for heavy traffic, but Saturday mornings are generally less congested compared to weekdays, especially during rush hour. That said, there are still a few factors to keep in mind:

  • Airport Traffic: The busiest time around Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is typically during the early morning hours when multiple flights are arriving. Since you’re picking up your rental car, you may experience a slight delay at the rental center, but once you're on the road, things should improve.
  • Highway Traffic: Saturday mornings are generally less crowded, but it’s still possible to encounter some traffic, especially around areas like I-285 (the Perimeter Highway) or near major intersections. The drive towards Blue Ridge, however, typically avoids much of the city’s inner traffic, as you’ll be heading north.
  • Event Traffic: Depending on the time of year, there may be events or football games that could increase traffic, particularly in areas like downtown or near the stadiums. However, since you're leaving relatively early, this is unlikely to be a significant concern.

Google Maps Suggestion: Google Maps is recommending a departure time of 8:20 AM for a 1 hour 50 minute drive, which sounds reasonable for getting to Blue Ridge by 10:30 AM. This gives you about an hour to get out of the airport, pick up the car, and get on your way. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Time Buffer: It’s always a good idea to allow for a little extra time, even on a Saturday morning. You may encounter a few minor delays at the car rental center or on your way out of the airport. So, leaving by 8:20 AM should give you a good buffer.
  • Route Considerations: The drive from the airport to Blue Ridge is a combination of interstates (I-85 and I-575), and the roads generally aren’t as congested outside the city. However, be aware that some parts of I-575 may have areas of slower-moving traffic, especially as you approach the northern suburbs.
  • Rest Stops: If you're planning to stop along the way, you should factor in additional time. The drive itself is relatively scenic, and there are a few places to stretch your legs if needed, but they shouldn't significantly impact your overall timing unless there are longer breaks.

Additional Tips for Your Trip: If you're aiming to be in Blue Ridge by 10:30 AM, leaving at 8:20 AM should give you enough time, assuming the roads are clear and you don't encounter major delays. However, if you want to be extra cautious, consider leaving a bit earlier (8:00 AM) to account for any unforeseen circumstances.

Once you’re out of Atlanta, the drive to Blue Ridge is scenic and pleasant, so it should be an enjoyable journey. Safe travels, and enjoy your time in both Atlanta and Blue Ridge!
