Best hotel and authentic diner options for transiting Brits
Hi there. We've got an overnight layover in Atlanta en route from UK to Belize. There are lots of convenient-looking hotel options, but we wanted to know which one would then let us easily access a shuttle/taxi/subway to venture out that evening to treat our kids to a good, reasonably priced, and authentic American diner or BBQ joint (they've grown up on Modern Family, Young Sheldon, and endless high school films!)
Thanks in advance. I suspect I will rather enjoy it too :)
For your overnight layover in Atlanta, you have plenty of great hotel options with easy access to public transportation, and you'll be able to venture out to some authentic diners and BBQ joints that will give you a real taste of Southern America. Below are some suggestions for both hotels and dining options:
### Hotel Options Near the Airport with Easy Access to Transit:
- Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway – This hotel is located just a short shuttle ride away from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). It’s connected directly to the airport via a SkyTrain, making it very easy to access public transit. It’s also close to downtown Atlanta, so you can easily venture out for a meal.
- Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel – Another convenient hotel for airport layovers, this one is close to the airport with a free shuttle service and easy access to public transportation, including the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) subway system. This is a great option if you’re looking for a comfortable stay with proximity to both the airport and the city.
- Holiday Inn Atlanta Airport South – This hotel is just minutes from the airport and offers a free shuttle service. It’s a bit more budget-friendly and also has easy access to public transportation, making it convenient for heading into the city.
- Best Western Plus Atlanta Airport-East – A more affordable option with free shuttle service to and from the airport. It’s not far from public transit, and you’ll find it easy to take a taxi or subway into the heart of Atlanta for a meal.
### Authentic American Diner and BBQ Options in Atlanta:
- The Varsity – An iconic American diner located about 20 minutes from the airport. The Varsity is a classic, with a fun retro atmosphere and a great selection of burgers, hot dogs, and chili dogs. It’s a staple for Atlanta and an authentic diner experience. You can take a quick cab or use public transit (MARTA) to get there.
- Mary Mac's Tea Room – This beloved spot is a bit of a classic Southern diner experience, offering Southern comfort food like fried chicken, meatloaf, cornbread, and collard greens. It’s a cozy spot with plenty of charm and a great place to sample some of Georgia’s most traditional dishes. It’s located about 20 minutes from the airport by car or taxi.
- Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q – If you’re in the mood for some authentic Southern BBQ, Fox Bros. is a must. It’s one of Atlanta’s top-rated BBQ joints, serving up delicious pulled pork, brisket, ribs, and smoked sausages. The vibe is casual and family-friendly, and it’s not too far from downtown. You can either take a quick Uber or public transit to get there.
- South City Kitchen – Located in Midtown Atlanta, this spot serves upscale Southern comfort food, with dishes like fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, and fried chicken. It’s a slightly fancier option but still offers an authentic experience. It’s accessible via taxi or public transit (MARTA) from the airport.
- JCT. Kitchen & Bar – If you're looking for a more modern twist on Southern food, JCT. Kitchen & Bar in the West Midtown area offers Southern dishes with a contemporary flair. The food is top-notch, and they have a great cocktail selection as well. It’s about a 20-minute taxi ride from the airport.
### Tips for Getting Around:
- For easy access to restaurants and the city, you can use MARTA, Atlanta’s subway system. The airport station is well-connected to the city, and it’s quick and affordable. From the airport, take the Red or Gold Line toward downtown, where you’ll find many dining options.
- Alternatively, taxis and Uber/Lyft rides are easy to catch from the airport and will get you to your destination quickly. Make sure to check for the best fare options for your family’s size and comfort.
Overall, you'll have no problem finding a good hotel close to the airport and venturing out to experience a bit of classic Southern cuisine. The kids will definitely enjoy the experience, and you’ll have a great time exploring Atlanta's food scene for the evening!
