October Open or Closed?
We will be visiting BH in mid-October. Will the downtown shops and restaurants be open or closed for the winter season?
Visiting Bar Harbor in mid-October means you are hitting the very end of the peak tourist season. While the town doesn’t shut down completely, there is a noticeable shift as many seasonal businesses begin to close for the winter.
Here’s what you can generally expect:
- Many downtown restaurants, cafés, and gift shops remain open through Columbus Day weekend (early to mid-October). After that, some start closing for the season, often reducing hours to weekends only.
- Accommodations like hotels, inns, and bed-and-breakfasts typically remain open through mid-October, though a few smaller, seasonal properties may start closing earlier.
- Tour operators for whale watching, lobster boat tours, and other excursions usually scale back or stop after Columbus Day. Some specialized tours may still operate but less frequently.
- Parks, trails, and scenic drives in and around Acadia National Park are always accessible, though shuttle services in the park may have ended for the season.
Tips for planning your mid-October visit:
- Check each restaurant or shop’s website or social media for updated hours, as many post seasonal schedules in September/October.
- Consider making reservations at any popular dining spots, as some may close early or only serve limited hours.
- Weather can be cool and variable, so dress in layers and be prepared for brisk mornings and evenings.
Overall, you’ll still find plenty of open restaurants and shops in Bar Harbor in mid-October, but the vibe is quieter and more relaxed than during peak summer months. It’s a great time for a peaceful visit and enjoying the fall foliage without the crowds.
