Coat suggestions?

Hello, I'm a southerner coming to visit Acadia NP and while I'm up there some other other areas of New England. I have 2 eye diseases that will eventually make me blind because my body has rejected treatments. I'm trying to see as much of my country as possible and all of the National Parks before that happens. However, spending a lot of screen time researching things is painful, so I'm just going to ask. I think I will need a coat for my trip in early October, at least for the evenings and maybe mornings. I have heavy winter coat, a dress up faux fur coat, and hoodies (disney and universal), but I don't think those are going to be appropriate for this trip. Does anyone have any recommendations? I know for people who live up there it's probably tshirt weather, but my southern blood and autoimmune plagued joints may not. Thanks for any help!

Visiting Acadia National Park and other areas of New England in early October means you’ll encounter crisp mornings and evenings, with daytime temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to low 70s (°F), though it can feel cooler near the coast and on higher elevations in the park. Given your concern about comfort and sensitivity to cold, layering will be your best approach.

Here are some recommendations for coats and outerwear that will keep you comfortable without being overly bulky or formal:

  • Lightweight insulated jacket: A packable down or synthetic jacket works well for mornings and evenings. It provides warmth without being as heavy as a full winter coat and can easily be layered over a long-sleeve shirt or fleece.
  • Fleece or softshell layer: Wearing a mid-layer fleece or softshell jacket under or over your shirt gives flexibility. Softshells are also wind- and water-resistant, which helps on the coast or higher trails.
  • Water-resistant shell: Early October can bring light rain or wind, especially in coastal Maine. A lightweight waterproof or water-resistant jacket with a hood can protect against the elements without adding bulk.

Additional tips to keep in mind:

  • Layering is key: Consider a combination of a base layer (long-sleeve cotton or moisture-wicking fabric), a mid-layer fleece, and an outer shell. You can adjust as the day warms up.
  • A hood or detachable hood is useful for wind and drizzle, particularly near the ocean.
  • Bring gloves and a light hat for early mornings or evening outings; they’re small but make a noticeable difference in comfort.
  • Your heavy winter coat is likely overkill for early October, and the faux fur coat may not be practical for hiking or outdoor sightseeing.

In summary, a lightweight insulated jacket or packable down, combined with a fleece and a water-resistant shell, should cover nearly all weather situations in New England in early October. You’ll stay warm in the mornings and evenings while remaining comfortable for daytime exploration.
