Food along Lakefront Trail South?

Does anyone have suggestions for a place to grab a quick lunch along the southern part of the Lakefront Trail? I'm not seeing much of anything south of Millennium Park. Looking for a casual lunch or snack spot (hot dog stand, food truck, casual to-go, even ice cream!) between Museum Campus and Promontory Point.

In another thread someone had mentioned hot dog stands at Shedd Aquarium and between the Field Museum and Soldier Field – but nothing is coming up on Google Maps. (I'm only seeing hot dog stands further north near Navy Pier and Millennium Park.)

Google Maps says that both Del Campos Tacos (food truck on Northerly Island) and Pier 31 restaurant are temporarily closed - is that correct?

Thanks for any ideas!

You’re right: there really aren’t many great “grab-and-go” food / snack spots along the southern stretch of the Chicago Lakefront Trail (LFT), especially between the Museum Campus and Promontory Point. That section is more residential and park-land than commercial, so don’t expect the density of food trucks or quick-service stands you might find farther north.

That said — there *are* a few options and strategies if you’re looking for a casual lunch or snack along that stretch. Here are some of the best ideas:

  • (South Loop / near Museum Campus) — According to guides of eateries near the Museum Campus, this cafe is one of the closest for a sit-down or quick lunch that isn’t inside a museum. It offers sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and coffee — a good start or finish to a lakefront walk or bike ride.
  • Take-out from South Loop / South of Museum Campus + Picnic on the Trail or at 12th Street Beach — Because on-trail options are scarce, some locals suggest grabbing something in the South Loop area (a quick sandwich, salad, or coffee) and then heading to a grassy or lakeside spot near the trail or the nearby 12th Street Beach / Northerly Island Park area for a relaxed break.
  • Restaurants near Museum Campus / Shedd Aquarium / South Loop as a fallback — If you don’t mind a short diversion off the trail (5–10 min rideshare or walk), there are several more substantial lunch or snack spots around the South Loop / Museum Campus area (e.g. pizzerias, diners, casual cafés) listed among “eats near the Field Museum / Shedd.” These aren’t on the trail but are close enough to connect easily before or after your walk.

Reality check on some spots you asked about:

Some of the names you mentioned — like a hot-dog stand near Shedd Aquarium, or food trucks near the Field Museum — might have existed in warmer months or during events, but they don’t show up reliably on Google Maps now; many appear to be listed as “temporarily closed” or no longer operating. That matches what others in local forums have reported — the food-service options along the south lakefront trail have become sparse.

My recommendation for your lunch/snack along the Lakefront Trail south stretch:

  • Start near Museum Campus — grab something at Spoke & Bird (or a quick café/ deli nearby) and bring it with you.
  • Walk or ride south on the Lakefront Trail toward Northerly Island / 12th Street Beach, find a bench or a lakeside grassy spot, and enjoy a picnic with skyline or water views.
  • If you prefer a more sit-down sandwich or meal, ditch the idea of “on-trail” — plan a short detour into the South Loop or near Museum Campus.

In short: you *can* find casual lunch or snack food near the southern lakefront — but you’ll almost certainly need to leave the trail, even briefly, to get it. Treat the outing as a mix: walk or bike the trail for views, then hop off for food and then return. That tends to give the best experience given what’s available today.
