weekend in JAX
I'm traveling to JAX soon and have most activities planned out. I am staying by the airport and will have a car, but am willing to travel within the metro area.
I am looking for a sports bar/entertainment place with solid comfort food for Saturday night and a casual seafood place for Sunday evening.
As far as Saturday, it must have ample parking. I've been to Miller's Ale House before and found it enjoyable, but would like a non-chain or small chain if possible.
Salt Life has been recommended to me for Sunday and seems like a nice choice, but would like other suggestions as appropriate.
Thank you in advance
Nice — Jacksonville has some great local options for what you’re describing. Here are a few solid picks for a Saturday night sports-bar / comfort-food spot + Sunday evening seafood, plus some things to think about.
Saturday Night: Sports Bar & Comfort Food
- Players Grille — A local sports bar + grill with lots of TVs, a broad menu (burgers, wings, salads), and a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere.
- Strings Sports Brewery — A favorite for locals. It’s more than just a bar: good craft beer, a sports-friendly vibe, and Southern-style comfort fare (some shrimp & grits, fried chicken) per guide descriptions.
- Gator’s Dockside — While it’s technically a small local chain, it’s very rooted in Jacksonville: a sports-bar feel, plenty of Americana fare, and some localized dishes like fried alligator tail.
Why These Work Well for You
- All are fairly casual — no need to dress up.
- They’re not huge tourist chains (well, Gator’s is a small regional chain), so they feel more “local.”
- Parking: these types of places generally have decent parking or are located in areas where the local traffic on a Saturday night is manageable (though always good to check for your specific spot and time).
Sunday Evening: Casual Seafood
- Southern Coast Seafood — A family-owned, casual, Southern-style seafood restaurant with locally sourced, seasonal seafood. Great relaxed vibe.
- Singleton’s Seafood Shack (Mayport) — This is a classic “fish camp” right on the water. Locals love it for shrimp, Minorcan chowder, fried gator tail — very authentic Jacksonville seafood.
- Safe Harbor Seafood Restaurant — Waterfront spot with a market feel; they serve very fresh seafood, including Mayport-caught fish and shrimp.
Bonus / Other Options
- Clark’s Fish Camp — More of a local fish-camp feel, with a large, varied menu.
- Palm Valley Fish Camp — A little more off the beaten path but very well regarded for casual seafood.
Tips to Make the Evening Smooth
- For Saturday: Go a little earlier or later if possible to avoid the biggest crowds, especially for sports bars on big game nights.
- For Sunday seafood: Waterfront places like Singleton’s or Safe Harbor can get busy, so call ahead if you want a table with a view.
- Use your car: Since you're staying by the airport, driving to these spots should be easy, but plan for possible traffic during dinner hours.
My Recommendation
- For Saturday, I lean toward Strings Sports Brewery — it’s local, fun, and has real character.
- For Sunday, Safe Harbor Seafood is a standout if you want that waterfront, fish-market feel — but Singleton’s is a classic if you care about atmosphere and a very “Jacksonville” seafood experience.
Enjoy your trip — JAX has some really good hidden gems!
