Day Trip?

We will be in Clearwater for a week next month.

Are there any day trips to places outside Clearwater that you’d recommend we check out? We will have 4 adults and two older teenagers.

Like seeing quaint beachy towns or other unique spots.

Thanks!

Clearwater is a great base for exploring the Gulf Coast of Florida, and there are several excellent day-trip options that combine charming towns, beaches, and unique attractions suitable for adults and older teens.

Recommended Day Trips:

  • St. Petersburg – Just a 30–40 minute drive from Clearwater, St. Petersburg has a lively downtown with a waterfront promenade, museums, and boutique shopping. Highlights include:
    • The Salvador Dalí Museum for a quirky art experience.
    • St. Pete Pier with restaurants, outdoor art installations, and water views.
    • Beach time at St. Pete Beach or Pass-a-Grille nearby for a classic Florida beach vibe.
  • Tarpon Springs – About 20–25 minutes north of Clearwater, this historic sponge-diving town has a strong Greek heritage. Perfect for exploring quaint streets, shops, and trying authentic Greek food. You can also take a short boat tour for sponge harvesting demonstrations.
  • Honeymoon Island State Park – A short drive north, this beautiful natural beach park is ideal for hiking, wildlife viewing, and relaxing on uncrowded beaches. There’s also a ferry to Caladesi Island for a more secluded experience.
  • Safety Harbor & Dunedin – Charming small towns with boutique shops, local cafes, and waterfront parks. Dunedin is known for its Scottish heritage and craft breweries, while Safety Harbor has a relaxing downtown with art galleries and a scenic bayfront.
  • Fort De Soto Park – About 45 minutes south of Clearwater, offering pristine beaches, kayak rentals, and historical forts. Great for a family-friendly mix of nature, history, and recreation.

Tips for a Successful Day Trip:

  • Start early to maximize beach time and explore towns without feeling rushed.
  • Check parking options, especially in popular beach towns and museums, as some areas have paid parking.
  • Pack water, snacks, and sunscreen, especially if planning outdoor activities or hikes.
  • Consider combining two stops, like Tarpon Springs in the morning and Honeymoon Island in the afternoon, for a full day of sightseeing.

Overall, the Clearwater area is full of options for relaxed, scenic, and culturally interesting day trips. Whether your group prefers beaches, quirky small towns, or a mix of both, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained.
