Weather

Hi. We are headed to poipu today. The weather report says cloudy in poipu the next few days. For you all that are there - with that kind of report - can we expect to see glimpses of the sun?

Thanks.

Shelly

Hi Shelly,

Weather in Poipu, Kauai can be quite variable, especially in the wetter months. Even when forecasts say "cloudy," it’s common to get breaks of sunshine throughout the day. Kauai’s microclimates mean that one area can be overcast while just a few miles away it is sunny. Poipu, being on the sunny south shore, generally sees more sun than the north and east sides of the island.

Here’s what you can typically expect:

  • Cloudy forecasts often include intermittent sun—so you may see clear skies for an hour or two at a time.
  • Showers are usually brief, often passing quickly with rainbows afterward.
  • Morning clouds sometimes burn off by midday, giving way to sunny periods.
  • The south shore (Poipu) tends to stay drier than north or east Kauai, so even on cloudy days, outdoor activities are still very doable.

Tips to make the most of your trip despite the clouds:

  • Plan morning beach visits—clouds sometimes linger in the afternoons.
  • Have backup indoor or covered activities ready, like visiting local shops, botanical gardens, or cultural centers.
  • Check live webcams or hourly weather apps for more accurate, real-time sun/cloud conditions on Poipu during your stay.

Overall, don’t be discouraged by a "cloudy" forecast. You’ll likely still enjoy sunny breaks and beautiful scenery during your visit!
