Maui hikes and snorkeling
Looking for recommendations for Maui hikes and beach snorkeling near Lahaina. We’ve done Pipiwai, Haleakala, and Iao needle. Years ago we snorkeled a marine preserve near Kapalua, is that still an option?
Thanks in advance.
Maui’s west side near Lahaina offers a mix of accessible hikes and excellent snorkeling spots, ideal if you’ve already done the more famous trails like Pipiwai, Haleakala Crater, and Iao Needle. You’ll find options suitable for a range of fitness levels and interests.
For hiking near Lahaina:
- Kapahulu Trail / Lahaina Pali Trail: This moderate trail offers sweeping views of West Maui and the coastline. The trailhead is accessible from near Lahaina town, and you can turn back at any point for a shorter hike.
- Kahekili Coastal Trail: A scenic but more challenging trail along the northwest coast. Be prepared for rocky terrain and some narrow paths. Great views and some beach access along the way.
- Pu’u Kukui / Olivine Pools Trail: Slightly further north, this trail offers waterfall views and native flora. It’s less crowded than the major valley hikes.
For snorkeling near Lahaina and Kapalua:
- Honolua Bay Marine Preserve: Still a prime snorkeling spot, especially in calm weather. Excellent visibility and abundant marine life, including tropical fish and occasional sea turtles. Morning visits are usually best as the water is calmer.
- Kapalua Bay: This is a very family-friendly snorkeling location with calm waters, a sandy bottom, and vibrant reef life. Easy beach access makes it convenient for kids and beginners.
- Napili Bay: A smaller beach with good snorkeling near the shoreline, especially near the rocky areas at either end of the bay.
Tips:
- Check ocean conditions before heading out, especially for Honolua Bay, as the swell can affect safety and visibility.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a mask, and possibly fins for better snorkeling.
- Arrive early for popular spots like Honolua Bay to avoid crowds and get the best calm water conditions.
- For hikes, carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and be prepared for some uneven terrain.
With these options, you can enjoy a combination of easy to moderate hikes and rewarding snorkeling without venturing too far from Lahaina.
