Outrigger canoe experience - Kihei Canoe Club versus HOCVS

Seeking recommendations for outrigger canoe excursion for our family of 5. We would like an excursion that includes culture and history. We are staying in Kaanapali but will have a car and don’t mind driving to the tour location. We have heard about Kihei Canoe Club as well as the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society. Are either of these more highly recommended than the other? Is there another club or recommendation that might be better for what we are looking for?

Both the Kihei Canoe Club and the Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society (HOCVS) offer unique outrigger canoe experiences on Maui, but they differ in focus, scale, and cultural immersion. Here’s a detailed comparison to help you decide:

Kihei Canoe Club:

  • Located on the south shore, Kihei Canoe Club is known for community-based paddling and shorter excursions suitable for families and beginners.
  • Focus is primarily on paddling experience, with some history and cultural information provided during outings.
  • Excursions are typically shorter (1–2 hours), which can be ideal for families with children, allowing a mix of paddling and scenic enjoyment.
  • Smaller group sizes make it easier to get hands-on experience for all family members.

Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society (HOCVS):

  • HOCVS is more focused on traditional Polynesian navigation, voyaging practices, and deep cultural education.
  • Excursions may include longer paddling trips with emphasis on Hawaiian history, navigation, and ocean stewardship.
  • This option is excellent for families who want an immersive cultural experience and a sense of traditional voyaging, but it may be more physically demanding depending on the tour.
  • Group sizes can vary, sometimes involving multiple families or participants learning traditional practices together.

Other recommendations:

  • Maui Canoe Club (Lahaina/West Maui): Offers family-friendly tours, some with cultural storytelling and scenic paddling along the coast near Kaanapali. Convenient if you are staying in Kaanapali to reduce driving time.
  • Ali’i Nui Cruises (Maui Sailing & Canoe Combo): Sometimes combines cultural paddling with a small cruise, including snorkeling, and can be tailored for families.

Additional tips:

  • Check age and weight requirements for each tour, especially for your children aged under 12.
  • Book in advance, as family-friendly outrigger tours often fill up quickly, particularly during peak travel seasons.
  • Ask about water safety, life jackets, and whether paddles are included. Most reputable clubs provide instruction for first-time paddlers.
  • If cultural immersion is your priority, HOCVS is the best choice. If convenience, hands-on paddling, and shorter outings are preferred, Kihei Canoe Club or Maui Canoe Club near Lahaina may be better.

Summary: For a family with younger kids and limited driving desire, Kihei Canoe Club or a West Maui club may be more practical. For a deeper Hawaiian cultural experience and traditional voyaging exposure, HOCVS is highly recommended, but be prepared for a longer, more engaged tour.
