A guide to exploring Pai, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Preface

In recent years, discussions about how Guangdong people spend the winter have been a hot topic every year. So, instead of spending a fake winter in Guangdong, it is better to go to Chiang Mai to spend a warm summer.

Chiang Mai—it seems as if the very word itself is brimming with nostalgia. Perhaps it's the memories of two years ago imbued with them, or perhaps it's the sheer hype surrounding it in recent articles that makes me relive life in this small city just by looking at the words. I long to see it again; after all, summer still needs a proper farewell. I came to Chiang Mai with no particular purpose; finding a café each day was my most important daily priority.

The latest Thailand visa on arrival guide

The Tourism Authority of Thailand's official Weibo account announced for the second time that the free visa-on-arrival policy, which originally expired on January 13, will be extended to April 30, 2019. A return ticket within 15 days is required to obtain a valid visa on arrival, so those planning to travel to Thailand for more than 15 days will still need to apply for a regular visa.

❤Thailand Visa on Arrival Guide—Domestic Airport Edition

Nanchang Changbei International Airport requires a visa on arrival of 10,000 Thai baht or 2,000 RMB in cash per person, but the Thai side conducts spot checks and may not find any. However, at Nanchang Airport, in addition to checking the return ticket, they also check the cash. There are no ATMs in Terminal 1, and the closest one is in Terminal 2, 1 kilometer away. I had no choice but to exchange Thai baht with the vendors outside.

The security check was very strict. My three pieces of hand luggage had to be rechecked, all batteries had to be taken out, and toiletries and cosmetics had to be taken out. This was the strictest airport I have ever been through. ️

❤ Chiang Mai, Thailand Visa on Arrival Guide—Chiang Mai Airport

After finally taking off from Nanchang, I felt much more relaxed when I arrived in Chiang Mai. The visa on arrival was processed at a small window on the left side of the entrance. You can only enter the country after getting the visa on arrival. It was processed in less than 5 minutes after I submitted it.

【Visa on Arrival Processing Time】

Because this flight goes directly to Chiang Mai, which is not as crowded as the big city of Bangkok, the 4-hour flight is not as scary as the online reports.

【Material】

Visa on arrival application form (also available on the Tourism Authority of Thailand official blog, in both Chinese and English, it is recommended to print it out in advance, https://www.immigration.go.th/download/1486544706654.pdf), arrival card (will be given on the plane), one 2-inch color photo with a white background, return ticket order (the Thai airport did not see mine), 10,000 Thai baht or 2,000 RMB in cash (I was not randomly checked)

【Kind tips】

Since most flights require visa on arrival, you can pack your luggage early and then rush to the visa on arrival window to save time.

About Transportation

Songthaew

Songthaews are only available in Chiang Mai and are rare in Bangkok. The songthaews in Chiang Mai can accommodate many people and the prices are not uniform, ranging from 20 baht to 100 baht. You can bargain based on the distance.

Take a taxi

Grab is a recommended taxi service for Thailand. Register with your phone number and use Alipay, which allows for convenient direct debits. Grab is very cost-effective in Chiang Mai; I frequently visited the suburbs during my trip and was always able to get a taxi. I'm less recommended in Bangkok, where taxis are often cheaper.

motorcycle

Motorbikes are a favorite mode of transportation for many independent travelers. Renting a motorbike in Chiang Mai is very convenient, costing around 50 RMB a day. However, be aware that Chiang Mai's main roads are very busy, and motorbikes can drive very fast at night. Also, be sure to bring your Chinese driver's license, as there are frequent traffic police checks near Chiang Mai's Old City. Failure to bring a license or helmet will result in a fine. I remember getting fined two years ago for not having a license (and even negotiating a student rate at the time...).

Accommodation

Chiang Mai

BP Chiangmai City Hotel

The first hotel is called BP Chiang Mai City Hotel. The hotel is located in the old city of Chiang Mai. It takes less than 10 minutes to get there by taxi from the airport. The exterior and lobby of the hotel are very upscale and generous. The overall decoration is retro. When you walk into the interior, it looks a bit old, including the elevator, corridor, and room, and there is a retro TV. The front desk enthusiastically escorted me in, helped with my luggage, turned on the lights and TV, and the service was very thoughtful and enthusiastic.

【Address】154 Ratmankha Road, Amphur Muang, Old Town, Phra Sing, Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai Province, 50200, Thailand

[Transportation] Take a songthaew from the airport, 100 baht

【Price】around 200 RMB

Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel

Our second hotel was the Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel. It's not located in Chiang Mai's Old Town, but in the northwest corner. The front desk staff spoke Chinese, which was very convenient. The rooms were still quite large, but as it's an established hotel, the decor felt a bit dated.

【Address】23 Huay Kaew Rd., A. Muang, 50200, Chiang Mai

Sabai Sabai

The third hotel we stayed at was Sabai Sabai. It's located between the Old City and Nimman Haemin Road. It's tucked away in a quiet alley, surrounded by residential areas. You can hear the chirping of birds in the mornings. Staying at Sabai feels like living in a palace, with its classical European décor. The staff were also very welcoming. Most hotels in Thailand have a policy prohibiting the consumption of durian and mangosteen. I understand durian, but I don't understand why mangosteen is included in the list. They told me that mangosteen has a very dark skin, which makes sense.

【Address】Sabhai Sabai Chamai Hotel, 26 Huaykaew Rd, Tambon Chang Phueak, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50300

【Average Consumption】300+

Leafy Greens Chiangmai

This guesthouse isn't located in downtown Chiang Mai, so it boasts its own fairytale-like courtyard and mushroom-shaped cottages. A European and American family with two children stayed there for a short stay. They spent their mornings drawing and reading in the courtyard. I was curious about their daily routine, as my days in Chiang Mai were almost repetitive, day after day.

[Address] Leafy Greens Chiangmai, 71 Chotana Rd, Tambon Chang Phueak, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50300

[Per capita consumption] 80rmb, a mushroom room can accommodate 3 people, cleaning fee, 180, so it would be more cost-effective to stay for a few more nights.

Bangkok

Banyan Tree Bangkok

Banyan Tree Bangkok is located in the heart of Bangkok, offering convenient transportation. You can choose a high-rise room, offering stunning panoramic views of Bangkok from your window. The hotel staff was very helpful and resolved any minor issues we encountered. They also helped with check-in. The room was clean and tidy, with elegant decor showcasing the essence of Thai style. The minibar was well-stocked with alcohol and a self-service coffee machine, and the small living room was stocked with fruit for guests to enjoy. The hotel also has a gym and swimming pool, both with stunning views, but unfortunately, my stay at the Banyan Tree was short and I didn't get to experience them all.

I like the bathroom facilities in the room very much. The shower, bathtub and washbasin are all separate, and every detail is handled very well.

Prince Palace Hotel

Do you really want me to stay in this huge suite all by myself? Prince Palace is a long-established Bangkok hotel. Downstairs is a bustling clothing wholesale market. The entire hotel is enormous, even the room itself. Upon entering and turning a corner, my first thought was, "Where's my bed?" It turns out it's hidden at the other end. The hotel is decorated in traditional Thai style, and the room offers a 270-degree view! It looks a bit dated, but it doesn't affect the stay. It's recommended for groups; it's too large for one person.

[Address] 488/800 Bo Bae Tower, Damrongrak Road | Klong Mahanak, Pomprab, Bangkok 10100, Thailand

About Phone Cards

Thailand has three major mobile operators: AIS, TRUEMOVE, and DTAC. The corresponding SIM cards are 1-2 Call, TrueMove, and Happy. A lazy approach is to get terabytes of internet access. Sellers usually offer a package that's easy to plug in and use. I bought a 15-day plan for around 60 RMB. If you need a link, send me a private message.

About Currency

Domestic: If it is convenient to exchange money at the bank, you can exchange some Thai baht. Bank of China requires an appointment in advance. The airport check-in staff will check the cash, 2,000 RMB or 10,000 Thai baht. At the Nanchang Airport, the check-in staff did not let me pass because I did not exchange Thai baht. Later, I found a vendor at the airport to exchange it.

In Thailand: You can withdraw cash from any ATM with the UnionPay logo in Thailand. The service fee is 150B per time, and the maximum withdrawal amount is 20,000 Thai baht. Domestic banks will also deduct 10+ RMB, so the service fee for withdrawing cash in Thailand is about 50 RMB per time.

About air tickets

The round trip was a special offer from AirAsia, less than 400 RMB round trip! To find special offers, you can check their official account frequently to see if there are any promotions. My experience with AirAsia: I frequently fly to Southeast Asia and I definitely fly with AirAsia. AirAsia is a budget airline that often has promotions. This time, I snagged a Nanchang-Chiang Mai flight for only 229 RMB, including tax. [Cabin Experience]

The plane is quite new and it's not uncomfortable to sit on. However, since we are all in economy class, the seats are a bit small.

【Cabin Crew Evaluation】

The AirAsia flight attendants are in eye-catching red uniforms, while the male flight attendants are in low-key black uniforms. They are all very enthusiastic and can speak Chinese. They may not speak a lot, but they speak the necessary few sentences fluently, making communication barrier-free.

【Meals】

The average price of a meal is 150 baht, and you can make a reservation in advance or buy it on site.

Chiang Mai Store Exploration

After walking around the old city of Chiang Mai for a long time, everyone said that we should respect the local time in Thailand, eat breakfast as lunch, and lunch as afternoon tea. No wonder the street restaurants here provide breakfast all day long, because many foreigners go to bars in the evening, or drink and chat all night, and then it is common to sleep until mid-afternoon.

Although it is located in a tropical country, Chiang Mai in December is very comfortable, with the temperature feeling only 26-27 degrees. You won’t sweat like in summer even if you walk outside for a long time. There are not so many rainy days, and every day is with clear sky and full sunshine.

Chiang Mai's most high-end shopping mall - Maya

Maya is pronounced as "Mea" instead of "Ma Ya" by locals. It is the highest-end shopping mall in the area and is located near Nimman Road.

This is a great place to find must-buy Thai cosmetics and other items, with much better deals than in China. The more famous ones include Adidas, Watsons, and the local Boots drugstore. The first floor is mainly clothing, the second floor is mainly drugstores, the third floor is mainly electrical appliances, and the fourth floor also has some food.

[Transportation] Take a songthaew from Chiang Mai Old Town, which costs 40 baht and takes about 15 minutes to reach the mall.

The basement level is primarily dedicated to snacks and delicacies, including a delicious Thai milk tea shop called "Cha Tra Mue." The tea is truly delicious, with a refreshing aroma, and costs only 40 baht. Most of the tea is priced between 40 and 50 baht, and there's a Chinese menu. This popular milk tea shop, Cha Tra Mue, can be found in almost every shopping mall in Thailand. Their Thai milk tea is slightly reddish in color, giving it a richer aroma. You can buy the same black tea bags in stores or supermarkets, and you can easily recreate the same flavor at home. For detailed instructions, see the Easter egg at the end of this article.

Crazy Noodles Curry

There is a Thai curry noodle shop on Nimman Road in Chiang Mai. Many locals come here to eat. You can DIY it yourself and choose the noodles and flavors. It is delicious and you won’t disappoint.

[Average Consumption] 60-160 baht

[Recommended] No. 18 Seafood Curry Noodles, No. 16 Shrimp Curry Noodles

[Business hours] 09:00-21:00

[Address] Crazy Noodle, 6 Siri Mangkalajarn Rd, Tambon Su Thep, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50200

I ordered the No. 18 seafood curry noodles, which had a very rich visual experience. When looking at the menu, choose the spiciness level instead of looking at the color of the picture. The light-colored one is the spiciest, while the red one is poisonous. I don’t quite understand it, ahh

The coffee shop of the world latte art champion

ristr8to Coffee is owned by a former employee of several renowned Australian coffee companies and winner of the 2007 World Latte Art Competition. Thanks to his connections, the place has a strong artistic atmosphere. Order a fancy latte and listen to the staff share the stories behind the coffee. The staff are young and trendy, and they don't mind people taking photos and videos. Located near Nimman Road, I didn't realize it was so popular before I arrived. As the afternoon wore on, the crowds increased, and there was a line. The place is small, with a Japanese izakaya feel.

【Opening hours】7:08 am - 6:08 pm

[Transportation Guide] Take a songthaew in the ancient city for about 30 baht per person

【Average Consumption】¥13 -¥38

Chiang Mai's new landmark - Nimman One

This time when I went to Chiang Mai, I found a specialty shopping mall called Nimman One on Nimman Road opposite Maya Shopping Mall. It is a gathering place for hipster cafes and Western restaurants. The brick-red style makes people feel like they are on the streets of Europe. The interior is very suitable for taking pictures. I saw several internet-famous restaurants here~ You can take photos that are different from those in your circle of friends.

There's also a food court in Nimman One, featuring specialty snacks like coconut, mango sticky rice, and kebabs. Prices are slightly higher than elsewhere. Each restaurant has a unique architectural style, reminiscent of a European town and a Middle Eastern bazaar.

【Visit time】1 hour

[Address] Opposite Maya Shopping Mall in Chiang Mai, also on Nimman Road

Every day, there is a special market outside Nimman One, which is estimated to be one kilometer long. It mainly sells Thai clothing, soaps, bags, flowers and other handicrafts. The prices are higher than those at the night market.

Encounter a Moroccan feeling

The small town of Chiang Mai has a Moroccan feel. Geometric prints and brightly glazed blue and white tiles are spread throughout the hotel. Its exterior looks like a garden, and its interior is like a work of art. The sun shines in the swimming pool and on the vases, and the bright colors of the wall tiles are also fully displayed. The exotic style is in The Grand Morocc Hotel. Even if you are not staying in the hotel, you can come in to check in and take pictures, as long as it will not disturb the rest of the guests.

[Transportation Guide] Take a Grab from Nimmanhaemin Road to the hotel, which takes about 30 minutes and costs 200+ Thai baht.

[Address] The Grand Morocc Hotel 596 2 Tambon Rim Tai, Amphoe Mae Rim, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50180

This Moroccan-style hotel is not very big, but every detail is unique, with seamless murals in the elevator and exquisite and beautiful tiles. It has its own tranquility in the afternoon. I recorded it with my camera and felt it with my heart.

Four Seasons Hotel

In the afternoon, we arrived at the Four Seasons Resort in the suburbs. The rural scenery was beautiful and charming, its luxury exuding a sense of seclusion. In the lakeside cabin, people were practicing yoga, workers were feeding buffaloes, and a summer Christmas tree grew in the rice paddies. We had originally planned to stroll around and leave, but the tranquility and greenery here made us stay for a long time. "I enjoy being alone, quietly reading, listening to records, watching movies, and thinking." - Leslie Cheung. Besides the well-known Teresa Teng, Leslie Cheung also had a deep connection with Chiang Mai. He owned a property called Villa One at the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai. Surrounded by lush green rice paddies and a mountain lake, he lived an idyllic and secluded life here.

[Transportation] The Four Seasons Hotel is 20 kilometers outside Chiang Mai. A taxi from Nimman Road costs about 230 baht and takes about 20 minutes.

【Visit time】Generally speaking, it takes 40 minutes to visit. We stayed here for an afternoon.

[Tips] The Four Seasons Afternoon Tea Set needs to be booked and is not cheap. You can also come to the hotel to visit even if you don’t want to have afternoon tea.

The Four Seasons Hotel Chiang Mai is nestled in the mountains on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, maintaining a remarkably private atmosphere. The hotel offers expansive views, and each room evokes a tranquil, pastoral atmosphere. The pool area is nestled amidst the idyllic scenery. A night here is quite expensive, and the Sala Mae Rim at the Four Seasons Chiang Mai is ranked among the world's top ten afternoon teas. If you're not staying at the hotel, you can also book the Four Seasons afternoon tea.

The luxury of the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai is not reflected in how magnificent and exquisite its architecture is, but in the magnificence of the rice fields in the valley and the special activities: washing buffaloes, planting rice, private yoga classes and cooking classes.

Private yoga classes are held in a cabin by the lake. In fact, yoga itself is a kind of spiritual practice. Thai yoga prefers to combine with nature, allowing the body and mind to meditate in the embrace of nature. This is also a luxurious yoga journey.

Gorillas on the outskirts of Chiang Mai

Huay Tueng Thao, also known as Huideng Tao Lake in Chinese, is home to several gorillas in the rice paddies on the outskirts of the city. The lakeside scenery is delightful, making it a popular leisure spot for locals, many of whom drive here to enjoy a sunset dinner by the lake before heading back.

There are no tour groups in this place, but there are many local tourists. Although it is far from the ancient city, it is definitely worth spending an afternoon here. You need to queue up to take pictures of the gorillas, and the overall photos look very photogenic. This is a niche place in Chiang Mai that I recommend to everyone. There are no tour groups yet, and friends can come and play with King Kong.

【Ticket】50 Thai baht

【Visit time】1 hour

[Business hours] 08:00-18:00

No.39 café

Hidden on a country road is a lakeside cafe. Although it is hidden, all drivers can find it. The popular online cafe has people of all skin colors.

【Average Consumption】100 baht

[Business hours] 09:30-19:00

【Tips】The shop is very crowded in the afternoon, usually taking photos. There are indoor and outdoor seating. In the afternoon, it is recommended to sit under the shade of trees or indoors. The Internet celebrity house is particularly sunny in the afternoon.

[Address] No.39 Cafe, Chiang Mai, 39/2 หมู่ที่ 10 Tambon Su Thep, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50200

The cafe has a wide variety of coffee, but a limited selection of meals, only burgers and fries for afternoon tea (very good!).

Wat Chedi Luang

Wat Chedi Luang is located in the ancient city of Chiang Mai. As Wat Chedi Luang is one of the must-see attractions in Chiang Mai, the road in front of Wat Chedi Luang is often blocked by tourist buses and tuk-tuks. Wat Chedi Luang is a historical relic of Chiang Mai. The towering trees next to the Buddhist temple add a mysterious atmosphere to this ancient temple.

[Opening hours] 06:00-18:00, no tickets are required if you come at night.

【Ticket】40 baht/person

[Transportation] Located at the southern end of PhraPokklao Road, the old city street of Chiang Mai Ancient City, it is about a 20-minute walk from the East Moat where hotels and restaurants in the ancient city are concentrated.

The Great Pagoda, which looks like an "Egyptian pyramid", sits firmly in the center of the temple, as if guarding the ancient city of Chiang Mai. After hundreds of years of wind and rain and the destruction of war, the pagoda has become incomplete, but it also shows its calmness after going through vicissitudes of life.

Coming out of the back door of Wat Chedi Luang, I found myself in a quiet residential area. When passing by a primary school, I was met by a large group of primary school students. They seemed to be waiting to be picked up by their parents. Some of them were attending cram schools nearby, some were meditating on the roadside, chatting and eating snacks with their classmates, and little boys were playing cards in the shop. I also remembered my childhood, when school was always the happiest time.

Chiang Mai University

Chiang Mai University is not accessible by self-guided tours; you can only enter by sightseeing bus from the entrance. The attendants, all seemingly students, speak Chinese (mostly, they do). The bus also broadcasts Chinese announcements. The final stop is Thanh San Hu, the heart of Chiang Mai University's scenic area. The bus stops for 10 minutes for photos. There's a swing at the visitor service area, perfect for taking photos. After the tour, you can take a songthaew up to Doi Suthep Temple on Doi Suthep Mountain for 40 one-way and 80 round-trip.

[Access] It takes 15 minutes to walk from Nimman Road

[Tickets] Chiang Mai University does not require tickets, the main fee is the sightseeing bus fee of 60 baht

【Visit time】30 minutes

The famous Meditation Lake in Chiang Mai University has the core scenery of Chiang Mai University. It is particularly quiet in the afternoon. The calm lake reflects the hazy mountains. The sightseeing bus stops here for 10 minutes. The farther we go, the more we feel that time is not enough.

Shuanglong Temple

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, also known as Wat Doi Suthep, is a famous Buddhist summer resort in Thailand. The temple houses three treasures: a crystal lotus atop a stupa containing Gautama Buddha's relics, and a statue of Gautama Buddha in the main hall. The observation deck behind the main hall offers panoramic views of Chiang Mai, making it a perfect place for photos. The group photo in the gallery was taken from the observation deck.

Friends who come to Doi Suthep in the afternoon are advised to go to Bhuping Palace first and then to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, because Bhuping Palace closes at 4:30.

Opening hours: 06:00-18:00

【Ticket】30 Thai Baht

【Visit time】1 hour

[Address] Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Road Tambon Su Thep

[Transportation] It costs about 30 baht to take a red songthaew from Chiang Mai city to the entrance of Chiang Mai University. There is a special songthaew line going up the mountain, which costs about 40 baht one way. You can also charter a car or rent a motorcycle to go there. The mountain road is steep, so please pay attention to safety.

During the day, Shuanglong Temple is bustling with incense, with bursts of Buddhist incense wafting in from time to time. When you come to Shuanglong Temple, you can follow the crowd and walk three circles clockwise around the golden pagoda, make a wish after paying homage, and experience Buddhist etiquette.

There are monks in the temples to sprinkle holy water on tourists and tie white ropes. It is said that tying white ropes means blessings, and red ropes are to ward off evil spirits. The tied ropes do not need to be removed, and can be left alone until they are worn and fall off naturally. This is equivalent to breaking a calamity. Many places in Thailand are shrouded in mysterious Buddhist culture, which makes people inevitably feel awe.

Northern Thai Rose

There is a popular Northern Thai restaurant on Nimman Road. Chiang Mai is known as the "Rose of Northern Thailand" and its cuisine is loved by tourists all over the world. Northern Thai cuisine has the sweet and sour taste of ordinary Thai cuisine, and one of its characteristics is "spicy". You need to queue up a long time in advance, otherwise there will be no seats if you are late.

【Store Name】TongTemToh

【Average Consumption】50 RMB

[Business Hours] 07:00-21:00

[Address] TongTemToh, 11 ถนน นิมมานเหมินทร์ 13 Tambon Su Thep, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50200

Thapae Gate

Tha Pae Gate is one of the important landmarks of the ancient city of Chiang Mai and the only relic left in the ancient city of Chiang Mai. There are many vendors selling pigeon feed at the gate and taking photos. The deep red brick walls and flocks of pigeons are standard features of Tha Pae Gate.

China-TravelNote similar routes recommended:

Ginger Farm has eggs 6฿

This Chiang Mai farm has a charming name: Ginger Farm (6฿). It grows ginger, scallions, fruit trees, and a rice paddy. It's also home to parrots, buffaloes, pheasants, rabbits, and goats. On weekends, there's even a mud pit for kids. The farm has a small restaurant, perfect for spending an afternoon sipping coffee—it's truly Chiang Mai.

[Business hours] 10:00-18:00

【Per capita consumption】100

[Transportation] Take a Grab from the old city, about 7 kilometers, and it takes 30 minutes

[Address] 34/1 Moo 12 Hang Khawe Soi 9 Thawangtan Saraphi Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50140

There is a cafe at the entrance of the farm. Next to the cafe is an area for children to take classes and play games. Most of the outdoor chairs are relatively low because this place is full of childlike fun. On weekends, many adults bring their children here to play. The children play in the sand while the adults drink coffee and chat.

Weekend Night Market

Chiang Mai's famous Saturday and Sunday night markets are both popular. Sunday's market is the largest, stretching nearly a kilometer from Tha Pae Gate. The main street stretches for nearly a kilometer, but the alleyways are filled with small stalls, making it a long way to explore. Saturday's night market, located south of the Old City, is smaller than Sunday's.

【Opening hours】16:00-midnight

Countryside Rice Field Cafe

This small-scale Chiang Mai cafe is nestled in a rice paddy. Access is via a creaky wooden plank path, and sunset is undoubtedly the most beautiful time. Besides dining, Brandnew Field Good also offers horseback riding. In the evening, the paddy fields light up with sparkling lights, creating a gentle atmosphere.

【Average Consumption】70 baht

【Business Hours】10:00-19:00 (open until 20:00 on weekends)

[Address] Brand New Field Good, 210 หมู่ที่ 2 Tambon Ban Pong, Amphoe Hang Dong, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50230

The restaurant is huge and great for dinner outdoors at sunset with a group of good friends and some beers.

Grand Canyon Chiang Mai

The Grand Canyon of Chiang Mai is one of Chiang Mai's lesser-known tourist destinations. It takes 40 minutes to ride a motorcycle from the Old Town of Chiang Mai to the Grand Canyon of Chiang Mai. It is a paradise for European and American tourists because it has exciting diving projects - a natural diving platform as high as 10 meters. After jumping down, you can lie on the bamboo raft in the canyon or soak in the water.

The Grand Canyon of Chiang Mai is currently a water park, where in addition to diving, there are other water activities to enjoy.

One Day in Pai

Pai is a three-hour drive from Chiang Mai. The classic way to explore Pai is by renting a car or motorbike, but the mountain roads can be quite rugged, so for safety reasons, it's recommended that women share a car. You can also book a day trip with a travel agency. The agency will pick you up from your hotel the next day, usually in a van, and the trip ends around 4 PM.

Pai's idyllic scenery, friendly residents, and relaxed pace of life make it an ideal holiday destination. The Yellow House, made famous by the Thai drama "One Step Away," is only accessible for photos outside. The bicycle and the yellow house at the entrance are classic postcard photos.

Pai Boutique Farm Resort

The resort is located in a tropical garden along the Pai River and offers rustic cabins and massage services. The resort is run by a couple. Most of the Thai cabins in the resort have beautiful views of the mountains or gardens and are equipped with a private balcony, electric kettle, and seating area. The deluxe car cabin we stayed in is a stand-alone villa. It was booked for 200 yuan per night, but now it has risen to 600+.

The owner and his wife of the resort are very enthusiastic. Just tell them and they will send someone or personally take you to Pai Commercial Street. You can also call them to pick you up free of charge. There are more than 10 cats in the hotel, lying lazily on the lounge chairs. Half of my happy time in Pai was spent here.

Conclusion

I'm Ma Xiaoyang, a piece of pork belly that's been traveling the world. See you on our next trip! If you like this post, please give it a thumbs up! Thank you!

P.S.: Thailand is a shopping paradise for everyone, young and old. You could fill a suitcase with snacks to take back home. See the image below for some great souvenirs.
