Kamchatka Peninsula Travel Guide: Diverse Ways to Play + Must-Reads Before You Go

Preface

This is a journey deep into the "wild land". Starting from China, we first go to Vladivostok, and then arrive at Kamchatka in Russia's Far East. Kamchatka, whose full name is "Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka", means "the farthest land" in Russian. It is the capital of Russia's Kamchatka Krai and the largest city on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

In a land area larger than the combined area of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong provinces, the population is only over 300,000 (the permanent population of Hangzhou's Xihu District was approximately 1.2 million in 2024).

Due to its small population, permafrost, and long distances, Kamchatka is one of only two places in the world that cannot be reached by rail or road, leaving it connected to the outside world only by air and sea.
Due to its geographical proximity to the United States and Japan, the entire Kamchatka Peninsula has been isolated since before the Soviet Union, making it difficult for even locals to reach, let alone foreigners.

This seal remained closed for a full 74 years. Later, due to the need to revitalize the Far East economy, the door was reopened. Because of this, Kamchatka's nature has not been over-exploited and destroyed, becoming a land rarely visited by people, with the original, unique and wild natural scenery of this lonely planet.

Facing the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk, and surrounded by countless volcanoes, it exudes a sense of wildness and loneliness...

What's in Kamchatka?

Brown bears, salmon, islands...but what's particularly remarkable is the rich and spectacular volcanic formations. There are nearly 170 volcanoes here, 29 of which are active, accounting for one-tenth of the world's active volcanoes. Lava and glaciers dance together, roaring day and night.

In addition to volcanoes, there are also rich landforms, such as the Kuril Lake and the volcanic lake, which also create rich species resources in Kamchatka. In summer, thousands of salmon migrate, attracting a large number of brown bears to hunt here. It is exactly the scene in "Animal World", and the voice of Teacher Zhao Zhongxiang seems to be ringing in my ears.

You can see the coastline formed by cliffs and glaciers, the same black sand beaches as in Iceland, as well as species such as seals, sea lions, killer whales, cliff murres, dolphins, and humpback whales.

Standing outside the unpredictable primeval forest, the oppressive feeling like the abyss is about to swallow you up, which is definitely an experience that is hard to imagine in the city.

How wild is the gameplay in Kamchatka?

The most basic mode of transportation in Kamchatka is an off-road vehicle. Driving through the dense forests, I understood why they say Kamchatka has "directions, not roads."

Cross-country, pass by active volcanoes to see geysers, take a modified car to explore glaciers and black rocks, the end of the road is our destination.

Rafting on the fast river, you can also go lure fishing. If you catch salmon, you can enjoy the freshest caviar. If you are lucky, you may even meet a brown bear and have dinner with them. You can see them up close and personal, watching these big guys catch fish, heavy but agile.

They made a fire to cook and set up a small workshop on the riverbank. The fresh fish soup cooked by the Russian uncle himself was also delicious.

Hiking on the volcano is a stamina-boosting hike. Standing at the crater and looking out over the surroundings, you'll truly experience the scorching heat of Kamchatka. Standing at the summit, if you're lucky enough, you'll encounter a sea of clouds rising, a truly magical experience.

Take a boat out to sea, and above the waves, the volcanoes appear like floating islands in the Pacific. Enjoy sea fishing and freshly cooked crabs! The glowing sea, the wind blowing off the Bering Strait, the deeper you go, the bluer the water becomes. Anchor in the Russian Fjords, and wait for the whales to surface, flapping their giant tail fins.

A must-read before your trip

【Visa】Russia uses electronic visa, about 420 RMB
【Exchange rate】1 RMB ≈ 11.5 rubles/ 0.14 USD. Exchange USD in China and then go to Russia to exchange for rubles. Rubles are currently difficult to arrange in China and the exchange rate is not suitable. Since Master, Visa and UnionPay cards are basically not accepted in Russia, USD cash is the best way.
[Transportation] You can use Yandex.go in Russia, which is cheaper than taxis
. [Language] The official language is Russian. The English penetration rate is very low, and it is higher in big cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg.
[Time Difference] Kamchatka is 4 hours ahead of Beijing.
[Communication] MTC or roaming is recommended
. [Charging] Russia uses European standard round plugs.
[Food] Russia has many delicious foods. Here are some of the more representative ones: borscht, Russian kebabs, pelmeni, pickled cucumbers, Siberian raw frozen fish fillet and black bread.
[Climate] Kamchatka has a cold temperate maritime climate (in the south) and a subarctic climate (in the north). The winters are long and cold, and the summers are short and cool. It is rainy and foggy all year round. In summer (June-August), the temperature is 8°C-16°C on the coast and slightly higher inland (around 20°C). The temperature difference between day and night is large, and summer is also the best season to travel here.
