Exploring the Stone City of Gjirokastër

#holidayitinerary Visiting Gjirokastër feels like stepping into a living museum where history and culture come alive on every street. The town is often called the “Stone City” because of its unique houses built with stone roofs and charming cobbled alleys that wind through the hills. Walking around, I loved how the Ottoman-style architecture blends with the dramatic mountain backdrop, making every view picture perfect.

The highlight is Gjirokastër Castle, which sits proudly above the town and offers stunning panoramas along with fascinating exhibits inside. The bazaar area is also a delight, filled with shops selling handmade crafts, textiles, and traditional goods that reflect the region’s character. What stood out most was the relaxed, authentic atmosphere, with locals welcoming visitors warmly. It is the kind of place where you can slow down, wander aimlessly, and still feel rewarded at every turn. Gjirokastër is truly a gem in southern Albania worth exploring.
