Roofless cathedral: This is a striking 13th-century Cistercian Gothic abbey church that has no roof, leaving its stone walls and arches open to the sky. The floor has been replaced by a grassy meadow.
Atmosphere: The lack of a roof and its rural setting in the Tuscan countryside create a mystical and highly photogenic atmosphere, popular for concerts and even weddings.
History of decline: The abbey flourished for nearly two centuries before facing famine, plague, and pillaging in the 14th century. The roof eventually collapsed in the late 18th century and was never rebuilt.
