Asahi Bridge, a symbolic landmark of Asahikawa City, spans the Ishikari River and is one of Hokkaido's most iconic bridges. Since its completion in the early Showa era, the bridge has served not only as a vital transportation hub but also as one of Hokkaido's three most famous bridges, alongside Sapporo's Toyohira Bridge and Kushiro's Nusamai Bridge. Today, it's a prominent feature of the Eight Views of Asahikawa, selected as a Civil Engineering Heritage and a Hokkaido Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, and awarded the Handukuri Village Award in 1999, a symbol of culture passed down through generations.
Walking across Asahikawa Bridge, one is struck by the graceful arched steel structure, featuring a rare brass, rebar, and keyrail design, which at the time represented a cutting-edge form of Japanese bridge engineering. Historically, Asahibashi Bridge served as a crucial route for the 7th Division, carrying countless soldiers to the front lines. Today, its solemn military atmosphere has faded, replaced by the magnificent views of the Ishikari River and the romantic atmosphere of its illuminated nights.
📸 Whether admiring the bridge's graceful curves reflected in the river during the day or photographing the romantic scene illuminated at night, Asahibashi Bridge showcases Asahikawa's unique blend of history and modernity.
