Exploring Sapporo, Otaru, Biei, and Asahikawa: Seafood, Flowers & Epic Views 🌸🍣
If you’re craving fresh seafood and dreamy flower fields, these Hokkaido gems are calling your name! I hit up Sapporo for unbeatable eats, chased blooms in Biei, and found some quirky sights across Asahikawa and Otaru. Read on for my quick-hit itinerary:
Top Spots to Visit:
1. Mount Moiwa Observation Deck (Moiwa Sancho Station, 1 Moiwayama, Sapporo) – Open 10:30-22:00. Ride the ropeway, catch panoramic sunset views of Sapporo city.
2. Otaru Steam Clock (4 Sumiyoshicho, Otaru) – Open 24/7. Snap pics of this classic, whistling steam clock by the canal; Otaru is also THE spot for fresh sushi and sashimi.
3. Shikisai-no-oka Panoramic Flower Gardens (Biei, Shinsei, Kamikawa District) – Hours change seasonally (May: 8:40-17:00, June-Sept: 8:40-17:30). Visit during flower season for endless tulip fields and a charming wooden chalet backdrop—Instagram heaven!
4. Shiroi Koibito Park (2-11-36 Miyanosawa, Sapporo) – Open 10:00-18:00 (admission ends at 16:30), closed Jan 1-2. Find your happy place in this whimsical park full of chocolate treats (don’t miss the famous Shiroi Koibito cookie).
5. Asahiyama Zoo (Kuranuma Higashiasahikawacho, Asahikawa)—Open 10:30-15:30; check seasonal closures. Kid-friendly, quirky animal exhibits and great for a slow afternoon.
Tips & Hacks:
Timing is everything—visit in flower season for those insane fields of color 🌷. Hokkaido rail passes make hopping between cities a breeze (especially if you want smooth, budget-friendly transport). Sample the local seafood wherever you go—Sapporo and Otaru are especially delicious. Carry cash; some spots are old-school!
Must-Eats: Sushi in Otaru; chocolate treats at Shiroi Koibito Park; don’t miss Hokkaido milk ice cream.
