[Shizuoka] Atami Onsen Furuya Ryokan

Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. Founded in 1806, Furuya Ryokan is a historic inn located in this town where hot springs, the sea, and the atmosphere resonate.

With a history spanning over 200 years, this inn boasts an unchanging hot spring source and ever-evolving hospitality.

The reason we chose this inn as our destination was because it's "authentic." The atmosphere, the quality of the water, and the passage of time all evoke that "long-established" atmosphere.

Location, Access, and Walking Around the City

Furuya Ryokan is located in the heart of Higashikaigancho, Atami City, approximately a 13-minute walk from JR Atami Station. It's also conveniently located just a few minutes by taxi. With plenty of walking spots to enjoy, including Atami Sun Beach, Ginza Shopping Street, dried fish shops, and coffee shops, it's a great way to combine a stroll around the city with a visit to the hot springs.

An Inn with a History

Since its founding in the mid-Edo period, Furuya Ryokan has been a constant presence at Atami Onsen. While respecting tradition, the inn has continued to renovate its interior and update its guest rooms, providing a consistently comfortable stay.

Universal design and barrier-free access have been gradually implemented, ensuring a wide range of guests can enjoy the inn with peace of mind.

Seizaemonyu's Free-Flowing Spring

Furuya Ryokan's hot spring draws from the source of Seizaemonyu, one of Atami's Seven Hot Springs. The water is 100% free-flowing, without added water, heating, or circulation.

The same spring is used in the large communal bath and open-air bath, as well as the guestroom open-air baths and indoor baths, allowing you to enjoy "real hot springs" wherever you are.

The water is gentle on the skin, and even the steam and aroma are natural. It's easy to see why hot spring enthusiasts say this inn is known for its healing properties. The pH is 8.1, and I love this quality so much that I've become a fan myself.

Guest Rooms and Annex with Open-Air Bath

All 26 rooms are spacious, Japanese-style rooms (over 12.5 tatami mats). This time, we stayed in a detached building with an indoor open-air bath made of cypress.

It's a special space where you can enjoy the silence and hot water all to yourself. The windows open to let in the breeze, and closed to enjoy a completely private bath.

The luxury of being able to enjoy the blessings of the hot spring all to yourself from the comfort of your own room is something you rarely experience, and it's truly soothing.

Spending time for two with in-room kaiseki cuisine

At Furuya Ryokan, both dinner and breakfast are served in your room. Savoring kaiseki cuisine privately without worrying about others is the perfect way to celebrate an anniversary.

The cuisine, made with seasonal ingredients from the waters off Izu and Atami, was beautifully seasoned with each dish. Their attentive hospitality was evident, with the accommodating staff even accommodating allergies and food preferences.
