Baku's Old Town: Between Stone and Wind

#hellohalloween

Step through the archway and it feels like time has stepped back.
Modern Baku, with its skyscrapers and shiny facades, is left behind, and ahead are narrow stone-paved streets, old balconies, carved doors, and the smell of fresh bread from the bakery around the corner.

This is Icheri Sheher, the heart of Baku and its oldest part. Everything is close by: the Palace of the Shirvanshahs with its mosaics and domes, the 11th-century fortress walls, old mosques, and small shops where carpets are still hand-woven.

Sometimes you walk and hear someone brewing coffee in a cezve behind the wall, somewhere above you, the flapping of laundry on a line, and nearby, tourists taking photos of old doors—doors that seem to remember everyone who once passed by.

📍 How to get there
Icheri Sheher is located right in the city center. The most convenient way to get there is by metro – the station is called "İçəri Şəhər." From there, it's just a couple of minutes' walk to the fortress gates.

🎟 What to see
— Palace of the Shirvanshahs (entrance fee: about 10 AZN ≈ $6)
— Maiden Tower – the most recognizable building in the Old City
— Kichik Gala and Mehmana Streets – the most picturesque walking routes
— Small teahouses where you can sip black tea with jam and watch the sun glide over the stone walls
