Exploring Bali's Majestic Mother Temple

This temple, the highest and mother temple in Bali, is quite a trek from Ubud, but the drive is stunning, particularly if you take the scenic route around the rim overlooking Lake Batur. I was pleasantly surprised upon arrival by the massive multi-story car park and welcome center, constructed a few years back. Tourists pay 150K IDR, which covers a sarong, shuttle bus, entry, and a guide. Our guide was excellent—fluent in English, humorous, and engaging. The temple complex is vast, woven into the village surroundings, and we loved it. Black volcanic ash forms the temples, and the views over Bali are breathtaking. Nestled on Mt. Agung's slopes, you can see the mountain behind the temples. We enjoyed an unobstructed view of Agung just before it clouded over and the rain began. It likely takes about an hour to explore the temples with a guide. Various shops are tucked among the temples, offering gifts, food, and beverages. Afterward, you walk 1km back to the car park/center, passing even more shops and sarong sellers. We got drenched in the rain, but the walk down was still pleasant.
