It was created in 2010 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Banff National Park.

The full trail from Canmore to Banff is called the Rocky Mountain Legacy Trail. The Banff Legacy Trail refers to the section within/near Banff (specifically from the Bow Valley Parkway to Banff East Gate).
