Explore the world through the eyes of a mantis shrimp 🪲

Explore the world through the eyes of a mantis shrimp at the exhibition "Mantis Shrimp Matrix" by artist Lip Talk (Sarah K. Pedinotti)

“What does it mean to truly see?” and “How can we expand our perceptions biologically, creatively, and spiritually?” These questions are at the heart of the Mantis Shrimp Matrix, which will take us into a world of perception that is beyond the limits of human perception.

The exhibition is inspired by the mantis shrimp, the most complex marine animal with a visual system in the world. With the ability to detect ultraviolet, infrared, and polarized light, the mantis shrimp perceives the world in dimensions beyond human comprehension. Its perception questions the Umwelt (the idea that all living things experience the world through a perceptual framework determined by biology, instinct, and environment) and connects it to our ancestral heritage, survival, and the meaning of existence.

The exhibition presents an interactive installation that combines light, sound, and sculpture to simulate the mantis shrimp’s vision. And challenge the audience to experience things beyond our normal perception, such as a simulated vision device that we can interact with specially designed devices to simulate the vision of a mantis shrimp, a coral reef sculpture made from plastic waste that reflects the impact of humans on the ocean and acts as a archive that records the history of the waste we leave behind, and the giant eyes of the mantis shrimp, glowing in various colors and acting as a window to different perceptions, telling stories from the depths of the ocean that are both strange and mysterious.

This exhibition encourages us to consider that learning and opening up to new perspectives is not just a thought process, but a practice of empathy. Trying to understand the experiences of other creatures is a practice of the discipline of living together in a world full of things we don't understand.
