Methavalai Sorndaeng Restaurant in the hotel

Although the restaurant is temporarily closed for renovation, the food service has not stopped. Those who miss the dishes from Methavalai Sorndaeng can still enjoy them at the back of the Methavalai Sorndaeng restaurant. The restaurant is temporarily operating at Methavalai Residence Hotel.

Atmosphere in the restaurant
It feels like stepping back to the early Rattanakosin era, where male servers wear white traditional Thai outfits, and female servers wear pink two-piece traditional Thai dresses while serving food. The service is excellent, and the tables and chairs have European floral patterns reminiscent of the early days when Thailand first engaged in international trade. This atmosphere is unique and cannot be found in other Thai restaurants.

Ordered menu
Pomelo salad: This dish has a delicious dressing and refreshing pomelo. Unfortunately, the shrimp in this dish was not very fresh.

Shrimp cakes: This was a dish we initially overlooked, but after tasting a bite from my partner’s plate, I ended up eating the whole shrimp cake myself. The outside is crispy, and inside there are whole, bouncy shrimp pieces.

Massaman curry with beef shank: The beef is tender and easily pulled apart, with a sweet-forward flavor.

Chicken tom kha: Not spicy, with tomatoes added for freshness. The flavor is rich and balanced, making it hard to stop sipping the soup.

Fried sea bass with fish sauce: This dish comes without sauce, so it’s a bit dry and bland.

Shrimp crackers: The shrimp is bouncy like the shrimp cakes, with a similar taste. It pairs wonderfully with plum sauce. When this dish arrived, everyone at the table quickly helped themselves.

For dessert, we ordered crispy ruby: The ruby pieces were salty, and the coconut milk was bland. Normally, I don’t eat sweets, but I still had to ask the staff for extra syrup to add.

If I come back to this restaurant again, I will order:
- Definitely the shrimp cakes and chicken tom kha.
