⛪ Exotic Atmosphere and Prayer Time - Visiting Yokohama Yamate Anglican Church and the Foreign Foreign Cemetery
1. A Gothic-Style Chapel Nestled in the Hills of Yokohama Yamate
Up the hill from Motomachi-Chukagai Station in Yokohama's port town, you'll find the Yokohama Yamate Anglican Church, quietly nestled among the exotic streets of Yamate. Its official name is the Nippon Anglican Church, Yokohama Yamate Anglican Church. This Anglican church, descended from the Church of England, is a Gothic Revival-style stone building rebuilt in 1931. Its impressive features include stained glass windows that allow soft light to filter in, and a ceiling structure that exudes the warmth of wood.
📍 Address: 235 Yamate-cho, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture
Worship is open to the public, and if you visit during Sunday mass, you can experience the tranquility of this space of prayer. Photography is often prohibited inside, so please observe proper etiquette and spend your time quietly.

2. Walking Respectfully Through the Foreign Cemetery
About a one-minute walk from the church is the Yokohama Foreign Cemetery, where the resting places of foreigners who have been involved with the city since the opening of Yokohama Port are located. Within the well-maintained white fence are the remains of numerous merchants, diplomats, missionaries, and military personnel from the Meiji period onward, creating a mysterious feeling as if touching "another memory of the port's opening."
The cemetery is open to the public only on its exterior, except on public days (usually spring and fall), but the solemn atmosphere is still fully felt even from outside the fence.

3. A Scenic Spot Overlooking the Port from a High Ground
One of the attractions of the Yamate area of Yokohama is the view from the high ground. We especially recommend Minato-no-Mieru-Oka Park, located just behind the Foreign Cemetery. From the observation deck, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Yokohama Bay Bridge, the port's cranes, and ships coming and going, and enjoy the different scenery in the morning, afternoon, and evening.
Additionally, between the church and the cemetery, you'll find historical buildings like Yamate No. 111, Yamate No. 234, and Bluff No. 18. A stroll through the area offers a chance to experience the intersection of Western architecture and Japanese history.

Yokohama Yamate, where foreign cultures and Japanese history quietly coexist. On this hilltop, you'll find a profound sense of time and space that can't be experienced through mere sightseeing. This is a route I would recommend to travelers seeking tranquility.
