✓ Banteay Srei
Among the many ruins of Angkor Wat, there is a palace built from rose-colored sandstone that appears particularly enchanting under the morning sunlight. This is the renowned "Banteay Srei," also known as the "Citadel of Women."
Located approximately 21 kilometers northeast of Angkor Thom near Phnom Kulen (Lychee Mountain), Banteay Srei was constructed in 967 AD and completed in 1002 AD. It was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The temple faces east and spans 200 meters in length and 100 meters in width. Built from reddish sandstone, it is adorned with intricate carvings, earning it the title "The Gem of Angkor Art."
Banteay Srei is unique among Angkor temples as it is the only major temple not built by a king. Instead, it was constructed by a minister of King Rajendravarman II. The temple's use of red sandstone, a relatively soft material, allowed artisans to carve detailed patterns as if working with wood.
