On this trip, let's admire the Columbus Monument, which gestures toward the New World! 🇪🇸🗿✨
🛄 | Experience at the Columbus Monument
At the end of La Rambla, on the way to the port, you'll spot a massive statue that stands out even from a distance. This is the Columbus Monument (Mirador de Colom). Built in 1888 for the Barcelona Universal Exposition to commemorate the discovery of the New World, this monument remains a must-visit attraction for travelers! 👏
At the very top of the monument stands a bronze statue of Christopher Columbus. With one hand gesturing toward the sea, it seems as if he is still urging us to set sail for the New World. Standing at about 60 meters tall, the monument's grandeur is overwhelming when viewed up close.
The base of the monument is adorned with intricate carvings that honor Barcelona's maritime history. These sculptures include figures of navigators, astronomers, and representations of the New World, making the monument feel like a historical record rather than just a statue.
An interesting feature is the small elevator inside the monument that takes you up to an observation deck. From there, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Barcelona's port, the sea, and La Rambla. Although I didn't go inside during my visit, just looking up at it from below was enough to deeply feel Barcelona's identity as a maritime city! 🌊
The Columbus Monument is not just a statue but a special place symbolizing Barcelona's history and its connection to the world. This massive sculpture, encountered while strolling along La Rambla, seemed to still embody the city's dreams of the sea. 🫠
