[Egypt Travel] Explore the Prototypes of Ancient Egyptian Pyramids 🔺 Red Pyramid, Bent Pyramid and Black Pyramid

Dahshur, located south of Cairo, preserves the prototypes of three important pyramids from Egypt's Old Kingdom period. The most famous of these are the three pyramids built by Pharaoh Sneferu.

The Bent Pyramid exemplifies experimental architectural technology, with its steep lower angle and gentler upper portion, giving it an apparent curve. This seemingly curved shape, likely due to temporary adjustments made during early construction, makes it one of the most distinctive pyramids.

The Red Pyramid, the first truly "right" pyramid in Egyptian history, is named for the reddish color of its limestone surface due to oxidation. Its structural stability and elegant symmetry later served as a model for the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The Black Pyramid, built during the Middle Kingdom, is constructed of mud bricks. Its original limestone covering has largely collapsed, leaving only the dark-toned core structure, hence its name.

Each of these three pyramids has its own unique characteristics, making them essential attractions for understanding the evolution of the pyramid.
