I imagined a refreshing trip with cool wind and clean water, but I ended up sitting on the sunny side and almost got sunburned. However, the cruise ship sailed on the Cixi Waterway for more than half an hour, and the scenery along the way was quite nice, with lush weeping willows and rippling blue water.
The disembarkation point is at the South Gate of the Summer Palace. The dock here is crowded with people, not on the shore but in the water, swimming, diving, rowing, and lying in the sun. It is as lively as a summer beach. Now that we were at the Summer Palace, we bought tickets to enter. The South Gate entrance to the park is a relatively remote place, and there are not many people except for the cruise ship ticket office, but you can get a glimpse of the vastness and magnificence of the entire Kunming Lake, which is worth the trip.
You can enter from the south gate and go around from the left or right sides to reach the main scenic area. We walked counterclockwise, keeping left all the way, stopping and walking along the shore of Kunming Lake. Looking into the distance, you can see the endless lake, the Seventeen-Arch Bridge sparkling in the sun, and the heavy and steady Buddhist Fragrance Pavilion. Various types of cruise ships are slowly floating on the lake, like the people in the painting looking at the picturesque scenery. We picked up all kinds of small stones along the way, and when we came across a flat and clean large stone, we would skip it on the water surface for a while. We spent an entire afternoon in this pleasant way.
