Lama Temple (Beijing)

#chinatravel

Also known as Yonghe Temple, the Lama Temple is a vibrant mix of Tibetan Buddhism and Chinese architecture. As soon as I entered, the scent of incense and the chanting monks created an atmosphere of peace. The centerpiece is the 18-meter tall Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood—it’s absolutely awe-inspiring. This temple is still active, so you’ll see people lighting incense and bowing with reverence. I found it quieter than other major attractions in Beijing, making it ideal for contemplation. It’s easily accessible by subway and well worth a visit, even if you're not religious.
