If I only had one hour in Beijing, I would spend it here, in Jingshan Park, without a second thought. It's not just a green oasis in the heart of the Chinese capital—it offers, without exaggeration, the best and most epic 360-degree panorama of the city!
Jingshan Park, also known as the Park of Gracious Tranquility, is located directly north of the famous Forbidden City. And this is no coincidence: the hill you'll climb was artificially created from earth excavated during the construction of the moats and palaces of the Imperial Palace. So the summit itself is steeped in ancient history.
The main goal of all park visitors is to climb to the top of the hill to the Wanchun Pavilion (Ten Thousand Springs Pavilion). The climb is short and easy, taking about 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. And there you are... and breathtakingly delighted!
The Forbidden City unfolds before you in all its majestic beauty. From here, from a bird's eye view, you can truly appreciate its grand scale, impeccable symmetry, and power. Endless tiled roofs, yellow as a symbol of imperial power, palaces blending into one another... It's a sight you'll never forget. The view is especially magical at sunset, when the sun's rays paint the ancient walls golden.
But the beauty isn't limited to the south! Take a full circle around the pavilion: to the north, you'll see the Gulou Drum Tower and the modern skyscrapers of the business districts; to the west, the sparkling waters of Beihai Lake with its white pagoda; and to the east, views of Beijing's bustling streets. This is a true 360-degree panorama, allowing you to see all of Beijing—ancient and modern—in a single frame.
Be sure to stroll through the park itself: it boasts beautiful paths, blooming gardens (the peonies are especially beautiful in April and May!), and cozy pavilions. This place where locals practice tai chi, sing songs, and play chess creates a wonderfully authentic atmosphere.
Jingshan Park is a must-visit for every traveler to Beijing. It's the perfect culmination of your exploration of the Forbidden City and will give you a true understanding of the monumentality of this great city.
