Beijing Must-Visit Itinerary Guide

My Beijing Bucket List! Great Wall - Shichahai - Forbidden City - Beihai Park Itinerary

This Beijing trip was packed with historical and natural landmarks: Day 1 covered Badaling Great Wall and Shichahai, while Day 2 included the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park, and Beihai Park. Although my legs were exhausted, my spirit was incredibly fulfilled—truly a 'must-visit' experience! If you also want to capture the essence of Beijing in just two days, this itinerary is a must-save.👌

Highlights of the Itinerary:
1. Take the cable car up Badaling Great Wall. Even if you're not physically fit, you can easily reach the summit. The view of the majestic wall stretching across the mountains is an experience you can only truly appreciate in person.
2. Shichahai exudes an old-world charm. Strolling by the lakes or wandering through the hutongs offers a relaxing taste of old Beijing, especially during the healing twilight hours.
3. The Forbidden City is grand and awe-inspiring. Walking from the Meridian Gate to the Gate of Divine Prowess feels like stepping through the river of history.
4. Beihai Park, combined with Jingshan Park, offers a perfect ending. Overlooking the Forbidden City's red walls and golden roofs, the park's scenic lake and iconic White Pagoda make for excellent photo opportunities and a leisurely conclusion.

🗓️ Itinerary:

Day 1: Badaling Great Wall Cable Car + Shichahai Leisure Walk
In the morning, take a high-speed train from the city center to Badaling Great Wall Station (departures available from Beijing Station or Qinghe Station), which takes only 20 minutes! Badaling entrance fee: 40 RMB. Be sure to take the cable car (a lifesaver for your legs). Opening hours: April–October 6:30–16:30, November–March 7:30–16:00. The cable car takes you directly to the most spectacular section, sparing you the uphill climb. The view of the winding wall from the summit is breathtaking.

In the afternoon, return to the city and head to Shichahai Scenic Area (north of Di'anmen Outer Street, Xicheng District). This area is open all day, with three interconnected lakes. The famous Nanluoguxiang and Lotus Market are nearby, offering plenty of dining and entertainment options. You can rent a pedal boat or stroll along the lakeside. Hidden in the hutongs are many retro-style cafes and small eateries, perfect for Instagram-worthy moments.

Day 2: Forbidden City → Jingshan Park → Beihai Park
Start your morning at the Forbidden City (4 Jingshan Front Street, Dongcheng District). Remember to book tickets online in advance (60 RMB). Opening hours: April–October 8:30–17:00, November–March 8:30–16:30, closed on Mondays! Spend half a day exploring the Forbidden City at a leisurely pace. Enter through the Meridian Gate and follow the main palace route, focusing on the Treasure Gallery and Clock Gallery.

Exit through the northern gate of the Forbidden City to Jingshan Park, where you can climb to enjoy a panoramic view of the Forbidden City (a fantastic photo spot!). Then, walk west to Beihai Park (1 Wenjin Street, Xicheng District). The park features attractions like Yaotai, the White Pagoda, and Jingxin Studio. The park is vast, so if you have time, take your time exploring. Boating on the lake is also a highlight.

💡 Practical Tips:
- Beijing attractions are crowded; book the Forbidden City tickets online in advance and choose a time slot.
- Visit the Great Wall early to avoid crowds; the cable car is a must to save your legs.
- Shichahai and Beihai are perfect for leisurely strolls, so allow yourself extra time.
- Wear comfortable sneakers (your legs will thank you) and bring a light jacket, as Beijing has significant temperature differences between morning and evening.
- Bring snacks and water for the larger attractions like Beihai and the Forbidden City.

Transportation Tips:
The city center is well-connected by subway. For the Great Wall, leave early from the city center; taxis or high-speed trains are both good options. Shichahai, the Forbidden City, and Beihai are within walking or bike-sharing distance of each other.

Food Recommendations:
Near Nanluoguxiang, try authentic zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste), douzhi (fermented mung bean drink), and traditional roast duck restaurants. For the Great Wall area, consider packing a simple meal or opting for quick bites at the scenic area without high expectations.
