Our family of five (2 seniors + 2 kids + 1 young adult) spent 5 days and 4 nights exploring Beijing Xiangshan, with a total cost of 4,890 RMB, less than 980 RMB per person. We stayed in a siheyuan homestay in Nanluoguxiang, traveled by subway, visited Xiangshan off-peak, and even saved on the Forbidden City tickets with some clever tricks!

📅 Itinerary: Slow pace + family-friendly

🏡 Accommodation: Booked a hutong family courtyard homestay in Dongcheng District for 2 nights at 880 RMB + 1 night at a budget hotel at the foot of Xiangshan for 300 RMB × 2 rooms = total accommodation 1,480 RMB (296 RMB per person)
🚇 Transportation: High-speed train from Xinyang to Beijing West Station second class seat 268 RMB/person × 5 = 1,340 RMB; city subway + bus card recharge 200 RMB covers the whole trip

📍D1: Arrive in Beijing, check into the hutong homestay, stroll around Shichahai at sunset, night tour of Yandai Xiejie to enjoy candied hawthorn and zhajiangmian (120 RMB for 5 people)
📍D2: Early off-peak hike at Xiangshan Park — the red leaves are at their peak! Off-season ticket 10 RMB/person (free for 60+), cable car one-way 50 RMB optional, we walked up and down for a more natural experience!
📍D3: Free day! Visit the outer Kunming Lake of the Summer Palace + take photos at Tsinghua and Peking University gates + enter the Old Summer Palace Ruins Park from the side gate, only walking the free east half
📍D4: Watch the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen (free! Reserve a spot at 4 AM), take a family photo, visit the National Museum during the day (free with reservation), dinner with old Beijing zhajiangmian (30 RMB per person)
📍D5: Before leaving, check out the Olympic Park to see the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube (free to view outside), then take the high-speed train home
