Located in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, Chinoike Jigoku is known as the oldest natural hell in Japan. It is also recorded as "Akayu-sen" in the Bungo no Kuni Fudoki, compiled in the Nara period over 1,300 years ago, showing its deep history.
The distinctive feature of this hell is that red hot mud containing iron oxide and magnesium oxide erupts from the strata, staining the entire pond red. The unique scenery is reminiscent of a hellscape.
There is also a foot bath on the premises that can be used for free, allowing you to soothe your travel fatigue. The shop sells Oita and Beppu specialties and original souvenirs, and the "Chi no Ike Pudding", which is made with eggs produced in the prefecture and milk and fresh cream from Kyushu, is particularly popular.
Chi no Ike Jigoku was designated a national scenic spot in 2009 due to its rarity. Why not visit it as part of your Beppu Jigoku tour?
Location: 780 Noda, Beppu City, Oita Prefecture
Business hours: 8:00-17:00
Access:
Take the Kamenoi bus from JR Beppu Station for about 25 minutes and get off at the "Chi no Ike Jigoku Mae" bus stop.
