Art, Architecture & Pintxos: My Solo Adventure in Bilbao, Spain

#mytraveldiary

Bilbao is the kind of city that surprises you. Once an industrial port, it’s now a gleaming hub of culture, food, and Basque charm—all wrapped in walkable streets and hugged by green mountains. For solo travelers, it’s safe, stylish, and seriously delicious.

My Solo Itinerary:

· Day 1 – Guggenheim & River Walks: Spent the morning at the Guggenheim Museum—as much for the building as the art. Walked along the Nervión River, crossed the Zubizuri Bridge, and wandered through the Casco Viejo (Old Town)’s Siete Calles (Seven Streets).
· Day 2 – Pintxos & Markets: Dove into Bilbao’s food scene with a self-guided pintxos crawl in the Old Town (don’t miss Plaza Nueva!). Visited the Mercado de la Ribera, one of Europe’s largest covered markets, for fresh produce and people-watching.
· Day 3 – Views & Vibes: Took the funicular up to Artxanda for panoramic views of the city and the bay. Explored the Azkuna Zentroa—a stunning cultural center in a converted wine warehouse—and relaxed in the Doña Casilda Park.

Top Tips for Solo Travelers:

· Stay in the Old Town or Indautxu: Central, full of character, and easy to navigate on foot.
· Learn a Few Basque Words: “Kaixo” (hello) and “Eskerrik asko” (thank you) will be appreciated.
· Go Early for Pintxos: The best bars fill up fast—go before 2pm or 9pm to snag a spot.
· Take a Day Trip: Easy buses to Gaztelugatxe (Game of Thrones fame) or the beautiful coastal town of Getxo.

Bilbao is bold, creative, and incredibly welcoming. Perfect for solos who love urban energy with a side of mountain air.
