The Plaza Nueva has become a landmark in Bilbao's historic center and a major hub of the city's social life. Within the colonnades of this neoclassical monument, shops, bars, restaurants, and cafés line the square, inviting visitors to linger and soak up the lively atmosphere. Every Sunday, a street market is held here, where collectors can find books, second-hand records, minerals and fossils, coins and stamps, art and crafts, and more. On December 21st, the feast of St. Thomas, a charming farmers' market is held, showcasing specialties from across the Basque Country. The square took 65 years to build and officially opened in 1851.
