I didn't have high expectations when I visited the Archaeological Museum, as it's located in the heart of Bilbao's old town and looks rather small from the outside. However, the collections are well-organized, offering a fascinating insight into the region's history, with a magnificent display of the Basque Country's history from the Paleolithic painted caves to the Middle Ages. While descriptions are only available in Basque and Spanish, there's an English audio guide, or if you prefer reading, you can request an English printed guide from the ticket office (which I did). I especially loved the circular stele; it finally made me realize where some of the symbols I'd seen on jewelry, souvenirs, and even cake powder came from! If you enjoy history, this is a great place to spend a few hours.
