On the way to the crater lake, we happened to pass by a church attraction: Skálholt Cathedral (Skálholtsdómkirkja) (Skalholt Cathedral). There were not many tourists here, so it was a good place for taking photos.

The medieval Skálholt was the largest city in Iceland. The church was destroyed by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes in the 18th century. The church you see now was rebuilt in 1963 and is the tenth cathedral on the site.
The cathedral has 25 stained glass windows and a small exhibition of the National Museum in the basement, which displays objects unearthed at Skálholt.
In ancient times, Skálholt was the richest, most populous and most influential settlement in Iceland. This center of Christianity, culture and education flourished for 700 years from the mid-11th century to the end of the 18th century.
