A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Þingvellir National Park (Þingvellir þjóðgarður) is one of Iceland’s most extraordinary places, blending dramatic geology with deep cultural significance. Located about 45 km from Reykjavík, it sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart, creating striking rifts and cliffs.
Historically, Þingvellir was the site of the Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament founded in 930 AD, making it one of the oldest parliaments in the world. The park’s landscapes include lava fields, waterfalls, rivers, and Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake. Visitors can even go snorkeling or diving in Silfra fissure, famed for its crystal-clear waters between two continents.
✨ Tip: Arrive early in the morning for a quieter experience, and don’t miss the Öxarárfoss waterfall—a gem within the park.
