🏨 Borobudur
🕙 Opening Hours: 6:30-16:30
❤ Recommended Reason:
One of the four great wonders of the East, you have to see it with your own eyes!
If the Tengger volcanic complex, where Mount Bromo is located, is the most worthwhile natural landscape to visit in Indonesia, then the most worthwhile cultural landscape to visit must be Borobudur.
🌟 Highlights:
Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and is known as one of the 'Four Great Wonders of the East' along with the Great Wall, Angkor Wat, and the Taj Mahal.
However, this magnificent relic was buried under volcanic ash in the tropical jungle for hundreds of years due to various reasons such as volcanic eruptions, dynastic relocations, and the conversion of the populace to Islam, until the arrival of Dutch colonizers, which led to its rediscovery.
The history of being forgotten by the world for hundreds of years also adds a lot of mystery to it.
🗓 Itinerary:
A typical visit to Borobudur starts with a trip to the Punthuk Setumbu viewpoint to the west, where local farmers burn straw in the early morning, and Borobudur reveals its outline through the smoke and dust.
Then, you can climb the stupa yourself, browse the reliefs on each level, and worship the only two Buddha statues that are not covered at the top.
To the east of Borobudur, there are two temples, 'Pawon Temple' and 'Mendut Temple', which you can visit along the way. The three relics form a straight line, which is quite miraculous.
Another quite intriguing attraction, 'Chicken Church', is also not far from Borobudur. You might want to take a detour to see it, and you can refer to my previous note.
📝 Note tips:
For the purpose of protecting the monument, only 150 people are allowed to climb the stupa each day, and other visitors can only tour the base. Therefore, it is recommended to go early to buy tickets on-site.
