Borobudur is Indonesia's most iconic Buddhist site and the largest Buddhist monument in the world. Located about 40 kilometers northwest of Yogyakarta, it was built in the 8th to 9th centuries using over 2 million volcanic stones. Standing 42 meters tall, it symbolizes the Buddhist cosmology. The structure consists of nine levels from the base to the top, and visitors ascending the stone steps will pass by over 2,600 intricately carved stone reliefs depicting the life and teachings of Buddha. The topmost level features 72 bell-shaped stupas, each housing a seated Buddha statue, with a grand central stupa towering above. Climbing Borobudur at dawn to witness the interplay of mountains and morning mist is hailed as one of life's must-see spectacles.
