One of the places I was most looking forward to visiting while traveling in Gijang, Busan, was Haedong Yonggungsa. Unlike other temples, it is perched on a cliff by the sea, and even before entering the temple, the scent of the sea and the sound of waves heightened the excitement of the journey. The scenery encountered while descending the stairs was like a traditional East Asian painting. The sunlight sparkled on the clear sea, and the majestic temple standing above it naturally slowed my steps.
Throughout the temple, there are dragon-shaped sculptures, stone towers for making wishes, and statues of Buddha set against the backdrop of the sea, making it a delight to explore. Especially when standing on the bridge extending toward the sea, the refreshing breeze brushing against your face gives a sense of clarity and peace. It is a place with an 'open view' unlike any other temple, giving the impression that nature and tradition are quietly conversing.
There are many photo-worthy spots, making it hard for travelers to leave. Some were quietly praying, while others were taking a leisurely stroll and enjoying the scenery. It was a temple that offered space for everyone to stay in their own way.
Haedong Yonggungsa is not just a tourist attraction but a place of respite where one can take a moment to rest above the sea. It is a destination that embodies the word 'healing' and is a must-visit when in Busan.
