Located at 948-1 Daeyeon 4-dong, Nam-gu, Busan, this museum was founded on July 11 1978 to preserve and display the rich cultural heritage of Busan and its surrounding region. It underwent a major renovation in 2002, which expanded it to include ten permanent exhibition rooms, a heritage research space, an experience hall and an outdoor exhibition area.
Inside, visitors will find more than 45,000 artefacts (with around 1,300 on display at a time) covering Busan’s story from prehistoric periods through the Three Kingdoms era to modern times. Outdoor exhibition spaces feature Buddhist statues, ancient pagodas and tomb relics excavated locally. The museum is also noted for its free admission and ease of access (near the “UN Rotary” bus stop and close to Daeyeon Station on the subway).
For your visit: allow about 1 to 1.5 hours to explore the main halls comfortably. The museum opens around 10:00 a.m. (exact hours may vary) and, as noted by visitor reviews, is well-maintained and informative — especially if you’re keen to trace Busan’s transition from a coastal settlement to the vibrant city it is today.
